It's quite interesting - you see Mr Nakayama using hook-punches quite a lot in film clips. Given that he was the driving force behind the modern JKA, it's suprising that hook is under-used in shotokan today. I wonder when it dropped out of favour.
Given that Nakayama pretty much defined what was or wasn't "traditional" in JKA shotokan as we know it, that doesn't quite ring true to me. I suspect it may be more that it's ineffective in karate kumite because of the range needed to make contact with it. By the time you're close enough to swing a hook punch, the other guy's hit you with a straight or a kick. That's the argument my instructor made against trying to score with elbow strikes in competitive kumite - by the time you're within range, you've usually been hit or grabbed. No reason not to train it in class though, IMHO.
i'm interested in how much mawashi zuki is used in the shotokai too, since from what little i've seen, if anything they're even MORE linear in te waza than stereotypical shotokan
Think you misunderstood, mainly because being flippant doesn't come across easily via the internets! What I meant was that the fact Nakayama trained it showed that the original lot saw some merit to it (also shows that Shotokan isn't an exclusively long range art). However, with the changing of the guard and what not, a lot of people have a tendency to over traditionalise the art, if you see what I mean. So in other words, if it doesn't fit someone's definition of 'traditional' (and considering it is used in more 'sporty' arts, there's probably a few traditional karateka who feel like this), it shouldn't be in the shotokan syllabus. But on the practical side you're right. Threw an elbow in kumite yesterday. Was about a metre and a half short... Although I have thrown a successful mawashi tsuki - although I'd wager your best chances of landing it are combined with a pivot, using the technique as a counter.

What does "koryu" mean? I've heard the term used on the forum before, but I don't know the meaning. Anyone enlighten me?
literally "old school" in general, it's part of the koryu (jjj, samurai weapon arts, etc) and gendai (karate, judo, etc) distinction applied to karate, it would be the old versions of stuff before the styles got "institutionalized", i guess
I didn’t say he is not a good fighter. But come on he clearly Aramoto doesn’t hit him from respect or whatever! Yahara knows that and he continues having no control in his tsuki/geri Why?To prove what? That is not very good behavior right?
well it's not exactly a surprise considering yahara is thought to have been kinda shady in his youth.
