This list is owned and updated by the Kuk Sool MAP group and will be updated as replies and debates are vetted on it's contents. Hopefully this list will help us identify and see how far reaching and extensive the practice of Kuk Sool really is. This list will hopefully help those wishing to train in our art or who are moving and may need to find a compatible school in the new area. Please limit debate to the list at hand, and not on the philosophy, history, legitimacy etc of the schools listed.

    Hi, Xanth.

I just wanted to point out that the logo you have connected to the Ki Cho Kuk Sool Association (which is located in Oklahoma) is not the KiCKS logo, but the *original* KSGA logo (FYI: the KSGA has adopted a new logo, which can be rendered more easily in a single color).

    Here is the KiCKS logo:

    EDIT:

Oh BTW, here are the KSGA logos:

And here's my Integrated Fighting Arts logo (which honestly* reflects the connection between the Korean and Filipino Martial Arts that I have been involved in over many years):

(*By which I mean that, unlike some, I don't incorporate or include stuff from other systems and then try to make out it comes from a different art — like Taekwondo guys incorporating Eskrima sticks in with their kicking and punching forms and 'selling' it to the general public as being Korean. Or people showing Filipino or Indonesian Knife work and claiming it to be Korean, etc.)

I do understand where you are coming from Pugil, though I was once told of a KOREAN (believe it or not) MA Master (his name escapes me for the moment) teaching in the UK who always told his students that he taught ENGLISH MA (cos they were in England) and NOT Korean MA.
The point being that if you go back far enough the origins of MA get very confused and just because you pick up a technique in, lets say China, doesn't make it Chinese, necessarily.
So long as it works...so long as it works!

Yes of course my friend! But I do try my best to give credit where credit it due if I am fairly sure of my source material. For example, I was teaching a whole load of stuff last night in class and one of the things we touched on briefly was the bent-wrist-lock. I told the students that the technique could be found in any art that practises joint locks and holds and so, therefore, belonged to no one art.

I then, however, went on to show several variations of how the lock is applied in different systems, and also gave them some ideas as to why there are those differences in application. It also helps the people who have done other martial arts, by explaining why different systems and schools may do things a little differently to their last school.

What I meant by my last post, is that when someone involved in a traditional system (especially) takes something from another completely different martial art system, and blatantly tells students (or at least leads them to believe) that what (s)he is teaching comes from their system. If someone is involved in cross training, MMA, or JKD, they are at least honest enough to take whatever they like, from wherever, and make no claim that it 'belongs' to them.

    Huh?

I honestly don't see it (i.e. the derailment of the thread). :dunno:

As to KS-Davenport, it's important to note that they are a KSW break-away (like many of the groups included in the list). I don't mean this as a derogatory aspect, just a fact which supports the connection to the MA in question. There is also much interaction amongst these splinter-schools, as is evident in the logo used by KS-Davenport being a variant of the one adopted (first) by KS-Pasadena (KS-Pasadena not yet being mentioned for inclusion on the list BTW). And since such orgs/schools such as KiCKS, CAMA, KS-California, KSB (i.e. Timmerman's MA), and JTMS have been mentioned (all of which are included as KSGA members), I think it might be wise to include any school listed as a member on the KSGA website.

    Anyway, just a thought...

considering Pugil said elsewhere that his school should not be listed in the list, then a discussion about his training practices in this thread seems out of place.
As for that logo - the pyramid + eye reminds me too much of the Freemasons or Rosicrucians
(damn - now you've made me go off-topic...)

Pretty certain that's a crescent moon, not an eye ;-)

I meant to say moon - eye was a typo. BUT the placement of the moon is correct to create the similarity, and those old alchemists did use a moon symbol - for Silver I think

LOL TYPO??? How can you possibly type "eye" instead of "moon" by mistake? :eek:Oops..now I am def :topic:
I think this list is actually a very GOOD idea as it brings home the choice of different KMA associations around today. Sure there are a lot of offshoots from WKSA but just as every instructor offers a different method of teaching, each org will have its own identity and values. Morec choice is (almost) always a good thing IMO.

Because I was involved in Traditional Korean Martial Arts training from 1973 to 1989, I used the Kuk Sool Plumflower outline in my Integrated Fighting Arts logo. Because my training in the Filipino Martial Arts, since 1989 until the present, has been heavily influenced by Guro Dan Inosanto, and his blend of Filipino Martial Arts, I also included the main parts of his Kali logo, as a mark of respect.

The reason I said that I had no part in your list is because I assumed that you were listing schools that only practised Traditional Korean Martial Arts.

Incidentally, the Kali logo is explained thus:

The Symbolism behind the Filipino Martial Arts Logo of Inosanto LaCoste Kali Blend
    The Universal triangle
The circle represents the Creator: form with continuous motion.
The Kali triangle: love, compassion, humility
The stick: the core of the Filipino martial art. The first weapon taught, from which to learn all other weapons
The blade (points upward toward “Life”); the blade is taught after the stick
The fist representing the empty hand art of the Philippines
The half moon symbolizes the “half” of the Philippines (Southern Philippines) which were never under Spanish rule, and also the “moonlight,” which was the only time kali practitioners could safely practice their art during Spanish rule
The four parts of the circle represent the four saints called upon by Kali
Practitioners: Saint Michael, Saint Gabriel, Saint Uriel and Saint Raphael
    Ancient “K” for Kali, kaliradman
Ancient “E” for Eskrima, estocada and estoke
    Ancient “S” for Silat

Anyone who is sufficiently interested can read a more in-depth description here: http://scottshieldsma.com/notes/?p=41

    *Rant follows:
I have no problem with break-a ways, they are free to do as they wish...however, if you choose to break away from the Won....PLEASE take references to the WON off of your site, url and uniforms. Seriously !, is it that hard to buy a new black dobok top and belt ? Is it that hard to a ctrl-F on your website and replace Kuk Sool Won with Kuk Sool ?
    Rant off*
