I thought it'd be good to have a library of hand wrapping techniques. Everyday I see so many guys down at the gym with terrible wraps. Really sloppy or just plain wrong. Sometimes it's from ignorance... sometimes it's from laziness... but there really shouldn't be any excuse for poor hand wrapping technique.

I often run across lots of people that don't understand the difference between bag wraps and getting taped up for an actual competitive fight. I don't know if I'm going to actually come across any vids of taping... but if I do I'll post them up here. Needless to say there are almost as many different types of wraps and taping as there are fighters.

    I'll start it off:

The boys from Philly show off an interesting Muay Thai hand wrap technique:

Cheers slip, sounds silly since ive been doing boxing for sometime now and thats the first time ive known how to wrap correctly! Ive usually just wrapped a lot around my wrists for support and never around the fingers due to not knowing how.

Only looked at one so far but ill check out the rest now, cheers bud! Ill second that on the sticky!

EDIT- I usually use a method similar to the 3rd video but will try on the finger wrapping.

I only use bag gloves. Is this wrong?

    Good posts Slip.
One thing to keep in mind is to not end up with a big glob of cloth in the palm of your hand if you do it’s wrong. You most likely not get a good gab in the glove there by having a better chance of damaging you hands.
Also I tend to use training tape over the hand wraps as this supplies a good deal more support.
Just for info you can tell if a fighter is valuable to his gym a lot of time as before each work out a trainer will wrap his hands with gauze and tape, not cloth hand wraps. It’s more expensive but the hands are much better protected.

Here’s a MMA gauze wrap. Boxing and Kickboxing will be somewhat different but this is good info.

Ace! I hadn't bookmarked that vid someone posted a while back and I still struggle with my wraps- had to get some thinner ones for my small hands :)

No as long as you have had no problems and continue to have no problems. I tend to use only training tape and gloves. I have no problems with my knuckles but need to reinforce the back of my hands and wrist and just tape works well for me.

I've recommended that 2nd vid a couple of times, if your hands are small the wraps come in different sizes, or you can cut and Wonderweb. Use the elastic wraps fo my son, works well.

My youngest daughter was very girly. Pink gloves, wraps, anklets & short. Oldest daughter, Black everything with black alien shorts.

Good advice, but at the same time why take a risk? Maybe better to wrap first?

My knuckles have never been a problem, but both wrists sometimes suffer (broken wrists in motorcycle crashes in the past) as do my fingers on occasions for the same reason.

As long as you're really slamming the bag it's all good :)

Just out of interest, anyone tried those gel gloves you can get for bag work? Saw some Everlast ones at the weekend? I'm not shelling out extra cash seeing I have my fancy "Shaolin temple" ones that obviously give me d34dly bag hitting powerz :D

They've been discussed on MAP before somewhere.
The general consensus was cotton wraps are better if I remember.

They're still intended for wearing under bag gloves aren't they Lou? They're just a replacement for the wraps, not the bag gloves.

Ahhh I'm not sure tbh. I don't like using bags on the glove ,I just prefer my wraps.
