Not being familiar with kenpo classes, i was just wondering what a kenpo student refers to his teacher as, being that kenpo has many backrounds with japanese arts using sensei, hanshi, etc, and chinese arts using sibok, sifu, sigung

In my Insructors school it was Sensei. But seeing how I am not a traditionalist by any means, I have my kids call me Mr. O'Keefe and my adults call me Fred.

I study Ryukyu Kempo, an Okinawan style. I believe most schools use the Japanese/Okinawan terms. My teacher, Tim Derby, doesn't use them, so we calm him Mr.Tim.

Exactly right MDK - Also some schools use the BB rank fomalities (i.e. - Professor, Master - for Master of Arts) ect... Od course, my instructor wants us to call him ny his first name - he is not ego driven even though he has a 6th in Kenpo and severla other high degrees in other styles.

we can call everyone sir, regardless of rank, but brown and up are sifu, (even thoughe generally we just call them by their first name, were a pretty casual school)

What do you call your teacher?

In American Kenpo we address our seniors as Mr., Mrs., or Ms.

Reminds me of a quote from Ghostbusters...

When someone asks you if you're a god... YOU SAY YES! :)

We call ours Sifu or Guro (Filipino)...our system is Tama Ryu Kenpo Jujitsu

Here's a little information for your reading pleasure from http://tamamartialarts.com/disc_kempo.htm...

"Our Tama Ryu Kenpo Karate System is an eclectic and traditional technique..."

"Our system came from the late Grandmaster Donald Fong from China handed down to Grandmaster Tim Gasper..."

"Grandmaster Gasper integrated the arts of Chinese Shaolin Kung-fu, Okinawan Kempo Karate-do, Judo and Jujitsu..."

If you're ever in Dayton, OH..stop on in.
