Do either of you know any good reputable place in Syracuse, if not MMA, some other style? It doesn't seem like there are many good options around here.

Hung Gar kung fu - Sifu Sharif Bey.

I know it's not MMA but it's a reputable MA school as xoneupx asked.

I have met Sifu Sharif Bey and found him an amazing instructor whom I would love to study with. If you can, check him out.

Contact Matt Bernius as well... his home base is Rochester and can probably recommend some schools.

Thanks for the suggestion, though I'm not super interested in kung fu

Thanks for the mention Thomas. JTiedes, I'mout of the area currently so my contacts aren't up to snuff. You might want to contact the folks at Syracuse Wing Chun (http://www.syracuseWingChun.com). Sifu Eric Winfrey is active in the JKD community and has numerous connections through out the area. While he's not a MMA specialist, he probably would have a good idea of folks who might be privately teaching in the area.

If you're really desperate you can truck out to Rochester (about a 1.5 hr drive) as there are a number of reputable programs there.

By the way, I have met Sifu Eric Winfrey as well and he is a true delight to work with too! (Take a look at my Journal entry #38 for a list of some local people whom you might want to look up)

By the way, if you are interested in driving north 2 hours, you are welcome to check us out and see what we do.

There is a Submission Fighting Academy / MMA school in Nicolville (about 2 hours from Syracuse) and not too far from me. Classes are taught by Al "Sonny" Duquette, who is a "National Master Submission Fighter, Gracie Jujitsu Instructor, Brazilian Jujitsu". Classes are fairly small and run about $10 a session... and are held Sundays and Wednesday nights from 8-10.

Mr. Duquette has a good reputation and has produced some good students (his latest guy won an event at NAGA). I just talked to him this morning but haven't had a chance to train with him yet, although some of our stduents have. If you are interested in contacting him (he probably has contacts in Syracuse), PM me for details and numbers!
