Hey Folks, Recently came across these "Stone Lock" vids. A lot of it reminds me of Kettlebells, some interesting exercise ideas to be gleaned too.. though not sure if I would dare try them at home, landlord may charge me for the holes in the walls and floor [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxhLXxZLSIg"]the Stone Lock Arts of Kaifeng's Eastern Grand Mosque - YouTube[/ame] [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMlVUcNQIhE"]The Stone Lock - YouTube[/ame]
You can't throw your KB the same way as you throw your stonelock. The weight distribuation are different. Your stonelock can give you much balance hold than your KB.
Never tried throwing either one, in fact never held a stone lock at all. Here is some KB juggling though: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NJlLvwpcJ8s"]Russian power juggling with kettlebells - YouTube[/ame] Mr. JW, you use Stone Lock's in your training?
Which one do you like better? SL or KB? Do you find some advantage from using one over the other? Thanks!
slipthejab has an entire thread devoted to these videos over in the Kung Fu section: http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95503&highlight=stone+lock I think they're pretty interesting tools and would love to try one. In Okinawan karate they refer to them as ishi sashi.
Thanks Kuma! I thought there was one too, but couldn’t find it with the search function for some reason. Maybe mods can shift some of these posts on to Slip's thread.
applications? I haven't had time to look at the vids listed but I wondered if the techniques practised in using the stone lock in Okinawan karate transfer directly over to techniques? I know we have long arm techniques that follow an arc in kung fu but I didn't think that there were the equivalent techniques in karate. Thanks LFD

This is my priority: bag throwing > breaks twisting/holding > stonelock > KB - Both stonelock and KB can be used to develop body function, arm, wrist strength. It can't be used to develop finger strength. - Since stonelock can be set flat on your arm, you can use it to do more different drills than the round shape KB. - To hold bricks in both hands will develop your finger strength. - To throw square bag filled with BB can develop both finger strength, good timing, and body method.
