I downloaded a program and needless to say it filled my comp with some spyware. Ive got Norton Internet Security 2007 and keep it updated. It reckonises the problem as spyware.marketscore, when i click fix it doesnt fix it. Ive been on to the website and looked at the removal of the spyware but it doesnt have it for Vista operating system, i checked which files the spyware had infected and have been into the registry but they aint there

Ive been looking round for a free spyware and came across spyware doctor and downloaded it, done a system scran and its came up with 13 threats and 400+ infections!

Not good obviously, ive asked to fix it but its says i need to up grade to the full version for it to remove the threats. Does anyone know a free spyware removal program or am i gonna have to go thro each and every infected area and delete them?

Ive also tried a system restore to an earlier date but that didnt work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i now realise how much my computer has obviously not been protected!

If you're running Vista, you should try running Windows Defender (or check that it's switched on), from the security center in control panel. I've got it run to scan and remove every day and it works well. The problem with Norton is that it tends to interfere and meddle with built-in Windows Firewall and security features, sometimes to their detriment.

Also, be wary of "free" spyware removal software that scans your PC, finds hundreds of threats, then asks you to pay for the full version to remove them. Spyware Doctor looks pretty legit to me, but try using Windows Defender to scan and fix threats before shelling out.

If all else fails I'd recommend Spysweeper from Webroot..

Ive also got defender on, but only just switched it on the other day after getting the problem, i will use a scan when i get time. It takes a while for the scan to complete.

Was supposed to mention the spysweeper, i also downloaded that previously to spyware doctor but that also mentioned i needed to pay to remove them. On the plus side the spyware doctor is blocking programs coming into my computer so the on-guard protection is working. Its also automatically cleaned up some of the problems for me so ive only got 7 threats and 294 . Still not good tho!

    Dude where have you been?

All that crap you're downloading is probably laden with just as much if not more spyware and adware than what you're trying to remove. lol.

    Seriously... get with the program.

    1) take a break from downloading porn... no need to explain or make up lame excuses... your secret is safe with us

    2) download and run AdAware (the free version will remove all threats)

    3) download and run SpyBot (the free version will remove all threats)

    4) download and run NoScript (it's free and has tons of options)

    5) download and install the AVG Anti spyware (the free version removes stuff)

    6) take the time to run these at least once a week and make sure that before you do... you update the definitions so that the software is looking for the latest versions of the adware that could be threatening your machine.

    7) get rid of Norton... it's crap

    8) go back to downloading porn... your secret is still safe with us.

    :p

Norton's only there to slow you system down, doesn't actually do anything.

Agreed. AVG is excellent, and their freeware version is pretty much all you need. AdWare & SpyBot are also excellent.

Yatezy, disable Norton before running Windows Defender. Also beware of running too many different types of anti spyware, adware, firewall and AV software at the same time, conflicts and the drain on your system resources can cause your PC to run like a real dog.

Micro$oft have done a decent job (did I say that?!) with most security issues with Vista, hence the multitude of confirmation dialogue boxes - every time you want to use the bathroom Windows asks if you're sure.

First things first, remove Norton - it's an interfering crock of poo. That will probably be a task in itself, as once it's there it doesn't like to go - kinda like the AOL of security software.

Switch on Windows Firewall and Defender and make sure Automatic Updates are on and set to download automatically. Set Defender to do a scan every couple of days, it runs in the background and if you've got a PC capable of running Vista, you should be able to multitask with it fine running in the background.

Lastly download AVG Anti-Virus (free version) from Grisoft. It's the single most functional and comprehensive piece of free AV software I've come across. Again set that to scan and update every day.

This is the setup I have on my machine and (touch wood) it's never let me down.

Anyone ever use “Hit man Pro”? It’s free and I have used it before and it seamed to work.
All it does is go to the sites and download the free versions of spy ware then run everything for you.
I’ve been using “Spy bot” it was free and I can up date it daily. What do you think of “Spy Bot”?

SpyBot is good - I've got AVG Free & SpyBot at home, & have never had a problem.

AVG do a good Anti Spyware Suite now as well.

I've found less need to run multiple programs with it.
