    "Life isn't always fair, but it's still good."

    I feel like I could workout, but the doctor's told me to wait a week before doing anything (like lifting more than 10 lbs). I'll go into more detail about what I had done at a later date (maybe next week).

    So, here's what I've done today. I'm itching to get back into the gym or do some bodyweight stuff.

    - 30 minutes walking
    - Practice chon-ji form

    On a good note, I've really been focusing on my eating habits this week.

    Sometimes focusing on other aspects of a healthy lifestyle can be just a productive as gym time. Walking is a good compromise - could you do some stretching or joint mobility stuff as well?

    I think I'll try to do some stationary bikes today. Here's my workouts for the day:

    - VanZandt's Flexibility Program (Level 6.6)
    - Walking (60 minutes)

    After a week of having to take it easy, I got back to it today. It felt wonderful. I'm going to try something different with the workouts for a while. I have 20 minutes after I drop off the girls at school. So, in that time, I'm going to try some quick 20 minute workouts before heading into work.

    I think I'll try hitting a different area each day (ala like MMA fighter Matt Hughes).

    Then in the evenings, I'm going to do some running with the pup.

    Here's my workout for today:

    Biceps, Triceps, Lower Wrists
    - EZ Bar Curls (6 - 12 reps, 3 sets, 50 lbs)
    - EZ Bar Preacher Curls (6 - 12 reps, 3 sets, 50 lbs)
    - Close Grip Bench Press (6 - 12 reps, 3 sets, 95 lbs)
    - EZ Bar Skull Crushers (6 - 12 reps, 3 sets, 30 lbs)
    - Behind the Back Wrist Curls w/ weighted bar (6 - 12 reps, 3 sets, 30 lbs)
    - VanZandt's Flexibility Program (Level 7.1)
    - Run 1.5 miles

    Our family has a tournament this weekend. I'm both nervous and excited. We have a lot of family coming for support so I hope we put on a good show for them :)

    Here's my workout for today:

    Legs and Lower Back
    - Squats (3 x 8 @ 135 lbs)
    - Stiff-legged deadlifts (3 x 8 @ 115 lbs)
    - Lunges (2 x 8 @ 30 lbs)
    - Good mornings (2 x 8 with 45lb bar)
    - One-legged weighted calf raises (3 x 8 @ 30 lbs)
    - Seated calf raises (3 x 8 @ 25 lbs)
    - Run 1.5 miles
    - 200 pushups
    - 100 crunches
    - work on TKD forms and kicks

    Here's the update on the procedure I had last week . . .

    I had a liver biopsy and ultrasound to determine the extent of damage to my liver. I have Hepatitis C (since age 2 from a blood transfusion).

    The results: I have fibrosis of the liver. Basically, that means there's scar tissue there. It's not cirrhosis, but serious enough.

    The doctor's recommendation is to either participate in a clinical drug treatment (which he is "conveniently" leading) or interferon drug treatment. To tell you the truth, I'm not crazy about either of those choices. I don't want to be a guinea pig. And interferon drug treatment is hardly an exact science (there are a lot of long term questions with it).

    I told them I'd like to do a "wait and see" approach. Basically, get checked every year. If the level of damage increases a lot in my liver, then I'll think about their treatments.

    Liver disease can have a slow progression (case in point, I'm almost had this 40 years and have only progressed to this state). I'd like to see if I can outlive the disease, especially if I focus hard on diet and lifestyle.

    Which brings me to the worst part of all this: I need to give up alcohol for good. I only have 1 or 2 a month, but they totally recommend none if I'm do go this route.

    I agree. So I'm officially on the wagon.

    If you all have any comments or suggestions please let me know. Thing good thoughts for me.

    - Dips (3 x 10 @ 70 lbs (on assisted dips machine))
    - Incline bench press (3 x 10 @ 95 lbs)
    - Pullups (3 x 10 @ 130 lbs (on assisted pullup machine))
    - One-arm rows (3 x 10 @ 30 lbs)
    - Palms-down wrist curl (3 x 10 @ 10 lbs)
    - VanZandt's Flexibility Program (Level 7.2)
    - Running 3 miles
    - TKD class

    - Military Press (3 x 8 @ 50 lb weighted bar)
    - Bent-arm lateral raises (3 x 8 @ 15 lbs)
    - Bent over laterals (3 x 8 @ 10 lbs)
    - Barbell shrugs (3 x 8 @ 50 lbs)
    - Incline shrugs (3 x 8 @ 20 lbs)
    - Cooper Test (1.45 miles in 12 minutes)
    - 3 mile easy run
    - Stretching and TKD practice

    Here's my workout for today. I took it kind of easy because I have my first tournament tomorrow. Wish me luck!

    Abs and Lower Back
    - Back Extension Machine (3 x 10 @ 100 lbs)
    - Ab Crunch Machine (3 x 10 @ 110 lbs)
    - Torso Twist Machine (3 x 10 @ 90 lbs)
    - Walking (15 minutes)
    - VanZandt's Flexibility Program (Level 7.3)

    This evening my wife works, so after the kiddos are in bed I'll work on some TKD techniques and forms.

    Here's the results from our tournament:

    - Our oldest got first place in her forms
    - Our youngest got third place in her forms
    - Myself: second place in forms and third in sparring

    I learned a lot. I have a lot of work to do. But we had a great time!

    Who's this VanZant anyway, and how does one get his program? I keep seeing the name posted here and I'd like to get more flexible, is that what it's for? Any help would be appreciated.

    This evening, I'll work on TKD before bed.

    - Chest Pullover (3 x 12 @ 20 lbs)
    - Run 3 miles

    - Seated Pulldown (2 x 12 x 75 lbs)
    - 3 mile run
    - Practice TKD techniques

    I took yesterday as a rest day. I'd been sick, so stayed home. After the kids went to school, the wife and I saw the new Denzel movie, "Safe House." Good flick!

    Here's my workout for today:

    Shoulders & Abs
    - Push Press: 2 x 8 @ 150 lbs
    - Upright Row: 2 x 8 @ 65 lbs
    - Incline Side Row: 2 x 8 @ 15 lbs
    - Front Raise: 2 x 8 @ 15 lbs
    - Bent Over Cable Side Row: 2 x 8 @ 7.5 lbs
    - VanZandt's Flexibility Program: Level 7.6
    - TKD techniques

    Tonight I'll do some ab work.

    We have a belt test next weekend, so it's time to time to really start cracking down. Tomorrow, though :) Today is a rest day.
