Yea here's an update. First off I haven't gotten to do a whole lot of karate in the past five months and almost none really in the last two, if I manage a couple three to five mile jogs a week I feel like I'm doing really well. My wife is almost done with breast cancer radiation treatment and starts hormone therapy sometime pretty soon. Anyway I did go to the club a while back and this is what I figured out, only one kid came back, she's about seventeen and from what I can tell she really does have a serious interest in the martial arts, gotta say the others involved haven't returned and apparently went in contact with any one I know from the gym, sounds like they either quit or as one rumor has it they train somewhere else. Interestingly while she was expelled our system with through some serious changes including two new and very random instructors that just came in and started changeling things and an entirely new belt system, kinda crazy, so she came back as a green belt she was a black belt and she has to test out again. That's really about it, nobody really talks about it at all, and everyone seemed focused on training rat:) her than last winters drama. Oh, Zak is a brown belt now lols.

AFAIC, the only news of import here is that your missus is progressing along very well!

Has it been eight weeks already? She handling the radiation treatment alright (meaning, of course, she's tolerating the side effects enough to finish the treatment)?

Good to hear from you again.

Been meaning to ask as I'd been offline for a month or so, how'd your eye surgeries fare? You've had them both done by now?

Intravitreal drug delivery has become a popular method of treatment of many retinal diseases, commonly including AMD, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Retinal Vein Occlusions. The frequency of intravitreal injections has significantly increased since the introduction of Anti-VEGF medications. This is an important procedure that Retina Specialists use on a daily basis, and it is important to master the techniques of effective injections for patient safety and reduction of complications.

She has been a total champion and her attitude has been fantastic throughout this entire ordeal.

Well...okay...if reciting the patient's procedure monogram helps to keep you on the table while they're sticking a needle in your eye, then by all means...

What I meant was how are you - you personally, dealing with it?

You're like me with having to be shackled like Harry Houdini just to get a few eyedrops in - I can only imagine what something like that'd be like.

I get frustrated when they tell me to "Keep Still"

The last series of injections, his assistant did not administered the proper among or numbing drops

When he stuck my eye, the pain was so intense, it carried to my ear and face on that side .

He freaked as much as I and hurried to put more drops

Sorry, I know this is a very unpleasant experience you're having but I can't help laughin

    Right. Why don't you? lol.

I recall once when discussing anesthesia options with my dentist ahead of a planned procedure, he began telling me about a conversation over lunch with a surgeon that he was consulting with who'd done some work on me previously and how I'd, without any warning whatsoever, reached up and grabbed a handful of his nose during part of the procedure.

Mind you, I was hooked up to a sedation I.V. , enough local anesthesia to numb a rhino and should've been totally unaware of anything.

He told me the surgeon had recommended him to use 1800mg of thiopental sodium -- a-ha! what a wise guy.
    Corr....almighty.

That's bad. That's just really horrendous.

There's nothing they can do but drops? Canna give you an intravenous relaxant beforehand? How many of these injections you have to do?

When I first started my martial art journey, my reflexes were to hit or grab physicians. Now I have :just enough control'....until

Kids do stupid things. That's why they're kids. Expecting them to be responsible adults is silly. Does the instructor get demoted as well for being so downright stupid as to give the keys to a teenager? Because if they strip the BB of his rank, the one who should have known better should get a taste of that medicine as well.

Yeah the kids should be punished. Definitely not be teaching. Busting him down to orange is just a cheap move to get him to quit without having to kick him out. After all, why not white then? Why stop at orange? There is no sensible reason.

Talk about a huge parenting fail. If your kid gets into trouble, instead of trying to actually be a parent when things are difficult, you just send him away and wash your hands of him? Effectively the people closes to him and whom he should be able to turn to and trust, are sending him away.

Well I haven't really responded to this yet so I guess I will just go ahead and post my personal thoughts and onions on the little situation that came up last winter, coincidentally at about the exact same time my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. P.s. this might get me in a little trouble but oh well here go's.

O.k. first off I resent the fact that certain people where I train get privledges that most of us there don't, I never say anything but I have always felt crappy about it. Second, I'm tired of the random changes that have taken place over the past year, some have been good though, some have really stunk. Example, we have changed belt rank progression twice this year and just this week the tests for each belt have changed, stick with something and just move forward IMO.
As far as the actual pot in the gym incident here it is for me. Who cares, why did I have to know, why did anyone else have to know and again why can't I have a key...idk. Kicking them out was dumb, only one student returned, and she came back with a vengeance and is clearly not happy with certain people, frankly I think she's right. Why did a retired highway patrol detective get to come into my class time and spout his worn out views on marijuana again I don't really care and I don't appreciate scare tactics. And lastly, if the system espoused that it doesn't have a golden calf or guru or any religious teaching then again why do I have to listen to any of your views on the marijuana debate if I didn't get caught doing anything wrong myself... Just my thoughts.

I think when one is faced with something in life really serious, like a loved one facing cancer, it makes people tend to just not put up with smaller dumb stuff. Stuff one used to tolerate, you just don't anymore. Because you realize what is important and you just don't have time in your life for nonsense. Your priorities change. Your tolerance for wasting valuable time on dumb stuff changes.

I think a lot of your concerns are valid, bodyshot. I am curious, is there enough you are unhappy about that you are thinking about changing schools?

Regarding changes in your curriculum. Do you see good reasons for the changes? Are they well thought out? Are the reasons why explained by instructors?

We recently changed our curriculum and sashes in CLF. And similar changes to TCC in our school are coming out in a week or so.

But in my schools case, it is well thought out and explained. My school's Sifu's are always evaluating how things are going and how students do. When they see a need for changes, they do it. but they hash it out and put a lot of thought into it. I have found them to be good changes.

For example: they took out about 40 techniques. We still have about 80. The idea was to take out some redundancy. (We don't need THAT many ways to learn to defend against a straight punch.) And they want less focus on memorization, so that students can focus more on proper technique. The idea of taking out some memorization makes it easier to do so. And the instructors explained the reasoning in classes and to anyone who wanted to talk about it.

We had our last change before this one about 5 or so years ago. Last time they took out some less practical weapons (farmer's hoe) and put in the far more practical stick form and added stick fighting.

Each change is carefully thought out to improve the teachings. It isn't random.

I am really curious to see the TCC changes. This is the first time they have changed the TCC curriculum since I joined the school 11 years ago.

So, as one who has gone through changes like this, I am curious what is bugging you about them?

Actually, I have seen the opposite happen more.
When people are dealing with real problems such as death and sickness close to them, they stop worrying about things that are relatively trivial in nature.

 Yes, and that is what I said.

I think you misread my post. Because you said you see the opposite, then state pretty much the same thing I did.
