salam,, does anyone know where i can find a ollection of silat wisdom, sayings, phrases or teachings? i am quite interested in the thoughts of the masters. great men are those who know that thoughts rule the world
Sayings There are two I like -- one says, "In a knife fight, the loser is ashes, but the winner is charcoal." The other says, loosely, "When they get ready, we are already done." Sudanese, I think. I heard the first from a silat player, the second came from a book on the keris.
ilmu padi: semakin berisi, semakin merunduk the wisdom of the rice plant: the more it contains, the more it bows down.
"We practice a caffeine-based martial art" -- Mushatq Ali Al-Ansari "You can't do that. That's not fair!" -- Lots and lots of people when they encounter Silat for the first time
Hi, How are you and your family? I hope the rest of your time in UK was a success. Thanks, again, for visiting us in Nottingham. What you said certainly made a big impression on Eddie, Vinnie and John particularly! (And me, of course.) chris
Sepandai-pandai tupai melompat ada saatnya jatuh juga.As clever as a squirrel jumps, there will be a time that it falls (traditional Malay). Alam takambang jadi guru Nature unfurls to become teacher (traditional Padang) Sura dira jaya ning rad lebur dening pangastuti. The brave and strong and victorious in this universe disolve before the power of love. (old Jawanese) Aja adigang, adigung, adiguna Don't flaunt your strength, your size or your intelligence. (Old Jawanese) Aja dumeh. Don't do some thing just because you can. (Old Jawanese) Tong kosong nyaring bunyinya Empty barrel makes loud noise. (Malay) Sadumuk batuk, senyari bumi, dibela tekan pati. One touch of the forehead, one finger width of land, both must be defended till death. (Jawanese) and so on, Warm salaams to all, KC.
That reminded me of a Chinese saying “silent water runs deep” i.e. shallow water makes a lot of noise.
There is a Malay equivalent: Air beriak tanda tak dalam : froth on the water means it's not deep. More: Di atas langit ada langit: Above the sky there is more sky. Warm salaams, KC
"Segenggam itu kepunyaan guru" "The masters use only few" "Kecik kecik tak nak mampus, dah besar menyusahkan orang" roughly translated as "you better off dead while you were little". *best said when you were doing a kuncian on your enemy * "Kalau kail panjang sejengkal, dalam lautan jangan diduga" simply means "know your place" i think that's all for now....
One of Guru De-bordes sayings Hi Guys just heard Guru say this on a video i was watching. Just to let you know, but he is saying about how prepared you have to be defend yourself "you take your opponent to Hell but come out alone!!!" regards Bela Diri
