I always keep that option open ... :)

OK .. you need to brush up on your cultural history of the region.

    1. Indonesia is a recent unification in the time-line of history. Before that the archipelago was united during the golden age of Majapahit, under the rule of Hayam Wuruk and the direction of the prime minister Gajah Mada. Indonesia (independence 1945) is a modern collective of a lot of different cultural groups. I am Javanese ... but do not consider myself Indonesian.
    2. A lot of silat has Chinese influence. That is a fact of history and no amount of chicken manure can obviate that.

Some theorise that silat began in Sumatra. I think that's difficult to prove and presumes that there is an unbroken line of influence from origin till now. But you're stating that as fact. Where is your evidence?

Nusantara archipelago has historically been a hub for trade (and exploitation) and has absorbed influence from every passing culture. Even your Minang and Batak's came originally overland from the SE Asian continent.
The 11th century had Sriwijaya empire based in Sumatra. It was a maritime kingdom ... had ties & influence from Indian subcontinent and China.

My apologies in advance for lineage name dropping ... but ...
In Javanese tradition, we count our ancestors to the 6th generation (gantung siwur).
My 6th generation ancestor (great-great-great etc. grandfather) is Raden Pangeran Ronggo Prawirodirjo III.
Among his children, one was my 5th generation ancestor Donoyudo and another was Sentot Prawirodirjo ... feel free to look him up in Wikipedia, Sentot was the commander of Pangeran Diponegoro's forces during the Java War's 1825 - 1830 ... and was also the in law to Sultan Hamengku Buwono III.
My point is ... who are you to tell me about pusaka (the correct spelling btw). Do you even know what a pusaka is?
Finally dotted through my family history ... are Chinese individuals ... hmmm now, that's very strange!

Now a bit of constructive criticism.

    1. Don't generalise or make sweeping statements of fact. Keep your talk about YOUR aliran.
    2. Learn a bit about the history's and cultures of the art you're interested in (or profess to teach). Silat is NOT only belong to Batak or Minang or Javanese or Madurese or Bugis etc. Silat encompasses most of the Se Asian region. For example, the Malaysians would be most upset if you tell them silat is exclusively Indonesian!
    3. Keep you information factual and to the point (See point 1).
    4. Learn the language of the region. Malay and/or Indonesian would be a good starting point. It will facilitate your own research.

Silat is continuously evolving and some styles of silat have been invented by people without input from older styles. All styles of Silat do not have a common origin or what you might call pure silat however you can trace the history of various styles and it is clear that some styles are much older then others.

As far as I am aware in Indonesia the oldest styles of Silat do originate from the West Sumatra area.

The Minangkabau people say their Silek Tuo is over 2000 years old.

Another very ancient style of Silat shows influences of Animism, that is Tiger style Silat. To be more specific the idea that the spirit of a tiger can possess a human and cause that person to behave and fight like a tiger i.e. fighting whilst in trance.

These two are the oldest styles of silat in Indonesia that I personally know of (if you know of older styles please do say)

The oldest style of Silat in Malaysia is said to be Silat Pattani which originated somewhere between north Malaysia and south Thailand.

Silat by all accounts is a "pre Islamic martial art" with an origin over 2000 years old.

Silat has incorporated internal/mystical teachings which are far older then Silat however, you can trace those aspects way back before the flood!

Could be intresting to make a comparison between Malay Silat Pattani and Minangkabau Silek tuo.

This does not make the content of the style superior to any other. The effectiveness of any martial art depends on the individual.

It could very well be true; Silat Minangkabau is very distinct. But what kind of evidence do you have to support this claim besides the statement of an instructor? I base my faith in a martial arts system not by how old the teacher says the style is, but by the skills they demonstrate, their ability to teach practical techniques, and their relationships with their students (i.e. not taking advantage of them financially)

do you mean pemacan (or pamacan)? self-hypnosis and altered states of consciousness are real enough-- in a trance state, people show heightened resistance to injury. A Sundanese Silat teacher told me that this activity is not for fighting, but for demonstrations-- similar to karate people breaking bricks. This makes sense to me because there is some preparation necessary to go into a trance state; it probably couldn't be turned on and off in time to work for self-defense situations (for example, look at 11:00 in this clip)

I agree, "... it is clear that some styles are much older then others". This is acceptable.

What makes silat "silat" from my perspective is the cultural container of language, psychology, and tradition in which the art develops and matures.

This idea I believe is far more fitting and in line with the practical aspect of the archipelago as a melting pot of external styles, infusing the culture of silat with a large range of differences. Bhinneka tunggal eka (from the Indonesian coat of arms ... Garuda Pancasila), many differences but still one ... explained by it's being integrated into culture. It is what makes people "a people".

Culture evolves as well, with respect and understanding for what has existed in the past and why it was so.

setuju (i agree), and as you mentioned above, Indonesia is not "one culture" but hundreds of different cultures. Ada buanyak macem soto 'kan? (there are many kinds of soup). to say one recipe for soup is the oldest means nothing; others have added and subtracted to it over time to suit their personal tastes.

I did not say older makes something better however old and authentic are two words often mentioned in the same sentence. Some aspects of silat are completly missing in newer styles. To some thats a good thing, to others thats a bad thing.

Silek tuo “old silat” is called that for a reason it is rather old but I will leave that up to your research.

The clip you show is of Debus, not really what I am talking about. I was talking about a belief that there is a great tiger spirit. Some enter forests and call on this spirit and make offerings to it. The idea is that it will possess you when you are in danger. I think this is the same reasoning behind some tattoos Silat players have i.e the idea that it will link them to a protective spirit.
  10. nasigoreng

    nasigoreng Valued Member

Not to sound like a smart@$$ but what evidence do you have that Silek Tuo is as old as people claim and that it is practiced today in the same way as it was supposedly practiced 2,000 years ago? I was actually hoping you had some research you could share on this, but instead you tell me to go research it. Pardon my skepticism.

Nigel Sutton (Khatami on MAP) has a book about Silat Tua (Malaysian), which might or might not be related to Silek Tuo, even though they mean the same thing.

I really don't know much at all about Silek Tuo (or Silat Tua). I don't know why, but I have this impression that it is also aimed at the older generations. I could be way off the mark tho.

To Nasigoreng ... Inggih Mas, pandangan ingsun situasi silat begini. Kalau diandaikan dengan soto sebagai metafor, kita bisa bilang soto ada ber-macam2 dan bumbunya beraneka ragam. Tetapi semuanya silat! :hat: (Yes Mas, to my view the situation with silat is like this. If we were to compare as a metaphor, we can say that there are many kinds of 'soto' with many types of herbs and spices. But all of it is silat!)

"We will try to trace - trace the history of Minangkabau silat of Minangkabau historical sources are full of Tambo Minangkabau Alam contains figurative form petatah, traditional proverb or dizzy. Silat Minang according to legend was first developed by one of his advisors Sultan Sri Maharaja Kings named "Datuk Suri Kings", commonly called by the name "Suri Datuk Ninik Kings" by the people - Minang people today.
Sri Sultan Maharaja of Kings, is a king in the Kingdom Pariangan. A first village was built at the foot of Mount Merapi on the XII century the Southeast (the year 1119 AD).

Ninik Datuk Suri Kings, is that many parents and in their knowledge in various fields of social life. He said also as a philosopher and statesman in the kingdom, as well as the first time to build the fundamentals of traditional Minangkabau; which was then refined by Datuk Nan Baduo, known by the title Datuk Datuk Perpatih Ketumanggungan and Nan A stick. Ninik Datuk Suri Kings that creates a variety of art and tools, such as martial, dance, diangkatkan of silat movements and make talempong, gongs, drums, flute, harbah, harp, etc. (I.Dt.Sangguno Dirajo, 1919:18). For the record here, about the truth content of Tambo people say containing 2% fact and 98% mythology Drs.MID.Jamal descriptions should be followed also in his book: "Natural Menyigi Tambo Minangkabau" (Study historical comparison) page 10.

Ninik Datuk Suri Kings (dialect: Suri Dirajo Niniek Dt) as a scholar who is said to "deep sense, the ocean of honor," where people sit and ask at that time; even the teachers of Maharaja Sri Sultan Kings. (I.Dt. Sangguno Durajo, 1919:22).

He is also likely to create a variety of dress, such as the neck and beaded bracelet on the feet and hands as well as ornate, bergombak one, four, and so on.
Ninik Dirajo Datuk Suri (1097-1198) and even then, as a sister in law ("Mamak House") of Sri Sultan Maharaja of Kings (1101-1149), since he became the first wife's sister (Parama-Iswari) of the Minangkabau King TSB. Hence also he is the "biological Mamak" Datuk Nan from Baduo.

Sultan's guards Kings named Sri Maharaja Kucieng Siam, Tiger Campo, Kambieng Utan, and Anjieng Mualim receive sebahagian magnitude of the martial arts legacy of Datuk Ninik Dirajo; although the intelligence they possess martial heritage of the country of origin of each existing well. In this case meant that the four royal guards were originally derived from various regions around the tongue Land (Land of Origin), which is around the valley formerly Hindustan. They are the descendants of the guards ancestors who first set foot once in the foot of Mount Merapi. The first ancestor was named "Dapunta Hyang". (Mid.Jamal, 1984:35).

Kucieng Siam, a guard who comes from the region Kucin-China (Siam), Campo Tigers, a burly bodyguard, drawn from the region Campa, Kambieng Utan, a guard who comes from the region of Cambodia, and Anjieng Mualim, a guard who comes from Persian / Gujarat.

Accordingly, the position or positions under guard has existed since the ancestors of the Minangkabau tribe settled in the area around Mount Merapi in ancient times; at least in the first century after the emergence of the Malay kingdoms in West Sumatra.
Reporting about the presence of the ancestors (Dapunta Hyang) have been published in the inscription referred to "Position Mount" in 683 AD, which is associated with the departure Dapunta Hyang with his hosts from Mount Merapi via Muara Kampar or Minang Tamwan Island Arbor / River Dareh to establish a kingdom meet the intention of the sacred journey. With a view to spread Buddhism. In the holy journey which is written / said in the Old Malay inscriptions in TSB with the words: "Manalap Sidhayatra" (Burn Hatta, 1983:20), contained also the intention to meet the requirements set up a kingdom by taking into account the factors of military strategy, politics and economics. Rose royal position will not conflict with belief / religion, because at the edge of the Batanghari found a place that meets all the requirements for worship or make offerings to the gods. Place, an island which flowed a large river, which is the confluence of two rivers that can also be called "Minanga Tamwan" or "Minanga Kabwa".

Finally, the island where dwells Dapunta Hyang overlooking the Mount Merapi (ie Himalayan Mahameru replacement) is called the Island Arbor (origin of the word: pujeu meaning puja). While the kingdom is established is called the kingdom Minanga Kabwa read: Minangkabaw.

    The origin of Silat Minangkabau
Minangkabau officially declared as a first empire formation and based in Pariangan, namely the Southeast slope of Mount Merapi.
In Pariangan's personality is formed and the development of Minangkabau tribe. In essence, the growth in Pariangan Minangkabau culture, not on the island Arbor nor in the area around the river Kampar Kampar Left and Right.
When people say Tambo Minangkabau tales that it is their right, even if we disagree. A fairy tale, the story is empty. but if it says it's mythological Tambo Minangkabau, it is reasonable, because it was still in environmental science, namely the presence of the word "Logy". It's just proof of mythology based on beliefs, which can be understood by those skilled in the field of science is also. Studies on the myth of today has abandoned it, because many of the object is not material; but "Spiritual or mystical". even so, everyone would have a gauge and assessors "truth", in accordance with their respective beliefs. Do something that has defined objectively, such as the science of history with all the objects as evidence in an objective and correct; of course also mythology also had objective evidence for those who can see it. Historical evidence can be observed by eye was born, while the mythology can be controlled by the mind's eye. Example: Rainbow can be seen by the eye of birth, whereas aureel rays can only be seen by the mind's eye. Likewise, the smallest bacteria can be seen by the eye of birth through the microscope, but the "witchcraft" can not be seen even with a microscope; can only be seen by the mind's eye through the "makrifat".
Therefore measure and assess the Tambo will never be weighed with the history and science will not also been achieved. Precisely because it measures the Tambo and also to judge only by its own tools as well, namely the belief that based on the fact that not every supporter didustakan by Minangkabau culture.

In this connection it is believed, that the royal guards as well as the king himself, whose presence as a descendant of the Minangkabau royal family palace on the island of Arbor / River Dareh. Pariangan after their arrival to the kingdom suffered a split, ie the occurrence of the palace revolution by killing their ancestors, named King Indrawarman in 730 AD, due to political interference T `ang China that embraces the Buddhist religion. Indrawarman king who replaced father Maharaja Sri Lokita Warman (718 M) "have embraced Islam". And it causes the T `ang China feels aggrieved by the" King of Minangkabau relations with the Umayyads "(MID.Jamal, 1984:60-61). Therefore the descendants of the Minangkabau royal guards of Pariangan no longer purely inherited martial arts are carried over from the original source of origin, but of a hereditary inheritance of intelligence. Martial arts that have experienced an absolute adaptation to the natural environment Minangkabau. Moreover, the influence of big sebahagian Ninik Datuk Suri Kings who teaches martial arts to the descendants of the guards resulted in the emergence of a blend of martial-arts heritage they received from their ancestors with the creation of the martial arts Ninik Dirajo Datuk Suri. In other words, even though every guard, for example, "Kucieng Siam" has a martial arts Siam received as an inheritance, having then studied martial arts Ninik Datuk Suri Kings. then finally Kucieng Siamese martial arts form is the result of processing the alloy or martial arts, which bentuknyapun so new. Similarly for the other guards themselves, all the result of the teachings Ninik Datuk Suri Kings.

Ninik Datuk Suri Kings have been formulated and martial arts uniform that contains the system, method, etc. for silat Minang, namely "Step Tigo", "Step Ampek", and "Nine Steps". He not only teaches the martial arts that shaped lahiriyah alone, but the martial arts that are Baatinites was revealed to the disciples, so that the quality of martial arts have the desired weight and in addition each escort will be a magic mendraguna, and authoritative.
In the Tambo also stated that Datuk Ninik Suridiraja has also "called Gayueng Baatinites intelligence". (I. Dt Sangguno Dirajo, 1919:22)
    1. Gayueng Born, which is a martial arts to be used to attack your opponent by using the master toes with three kinds of targets:
    a. Around the neck, the Adam's apple / Adam's apple and throat.
    b. Around the folds of the abdomen, ie pit of the stomach and navel.
    c. Around the groin, the genitalia
The third target is the target called "Sajangka two fingers".
    2. Gayueng wind, ie, attacking the opponent by using the inner power through shaking hands, flick or nudge the index finger. target is composed of series of offal heart, darling, and cluster spleen.

Science Gayueng owned Ninik Datuk Suri Kings called "Gayueng" in Tambo Gyueng it is the second type, namely gayueng wind. Skill gayueng silat with the wind without the use of equipment. If the use of inner power that using the equipment, then there are various kinds, namely:
    1. Juhueng, which in Java is referred to as witchcraft, with a kind alat2 nails and needles, small knife, etc..
    2. Parmayo, flat-iron benda2 an easy posted.
    3. Sewai, a doll who was stabbed repeatedly
    4. Tinggam, like Sewai too, but a tool embedded in the doll tikamnya

Skill Silat uses an inner power that has been mentioned above, is still kept by the fighters, especially fighter-old fighter. Science is referred to as the term "P*****HAN" or deposits. Because the science of martial arts as a science and art is the creation Ninik Datuk Suri Kings, then if it should be studied according to the customs procedures applicable in the field persilatan. prevailing customs procedures was mentioned in Minang proverb: "The terms of dipaturun-jo panaikan manuruik Alue patuik" given to the Master.

Four days of that famous line of defense and security forces under the leadership of Kucieng Siamese, Tiger Campo, Kambieng Forest, and Anjieng Mualim; four are students Ninik Dirajo Datuk Suri.
When Datuk Nan Nan Tigo Batigo form LUHAK (1186 AD) and open ground Overseas (originally founded the Kingdom of the River Capping 1245 AD, when the Raja Alam Pagaruyung, is the Rum Pitualo, great-grandson of Princess Jamilah great grandson or nephew of Datuk Ketumanggungan), then The leader of the group who moved to bring the population, are members of the selection of defense and security of the kingdom.
    1. For groups to LUHAK Tanah Datar, leader of the group is a member of the line Kucieng Siam.
    2. For groups to LUHAK Agam, led by a row of tiger Campo.
    3. For groups to LUHAK Fifty-Payakumbuh, led by members of the Forest Kambieng row.
    4. For groups to Overseas Land and Coastal led by members of the ranks Anjieng Mualim.
Each force / army ranks or have had martial arts brought from Pariangan. With martial arts held each generation, defined the functions and duties, administration and determination of the functions / tasks by Sultan Sri Maharaja Kings under the provisions of which have been bequeathed by our ancestors during this go Swarna Dwipa previously.

The functions and tasks that each party bear was clarified as follows:
    1. Rows of the royal bodyguard, Anjieng Mualim serve as security guards
    2. Rows of Destroyer, Kambieng Forest serves as a destroyer or engineers
    3. Barisan Hunter, Tiger Campo serves as a Jaguar or a hunter
    4. Rescuers row, Kucieng Siam serves as a riot.

    1. Silat flow Kucieng Siam:
Now the name of Siam became a symbol Kucieng LUHAK Tanah Datar region ....
The shape and nature of the country of origin Kucin Chinese martial-Siam:
the role of the feet (kick) became his trademark. Hand function and weaken your opponent's attention megalihkan durability opponent.

    2. Tiger Silat flow Campo:
Campo Tiger emblem given to LUHAK Agam.
The shape and nature of the movement:
resembles a tiger is like nature, hard, strike without patience aka pounce. rely on hand strength.

    3. Silat flow Kambieng Forest:
    Fifty-Payokumbuh LUHAK get these symbols.
The shape and nature of the movement:
presenting a lot of feinting, in addition to using the hand is also accompanied with a header / encouragement to use the head and clamp foot.

    4. Silat flow Anjieng Mualim:
given to the Overseas Land-Coastal areas are around the river valleys and tributaries of the Bukit Barisan mountains.
The shape and nature of the movement:
    a. form of attack by making a circle
    b. form of defense by staying in the loop.
forms of these movements cause motions that lead to the four winds, moves or so-called "four step".
From this beginning step Ampek formed by Datuk Suri Ninik Kings.
so Silat Minang have two kinds persilatan nucleus being typical:
Step Tigo (Kucieng Siam) and Step Ampek (Anjieng Mualim).
The next step then is developed into Step Nine.
Nine next step is no longer referred to as Silat, but has changed the name of Pencak (Mancak).

Silat Tigo step (step three) was originally owned by Kucieng Siamese, Tiger Campo, and Kambieng Forest; a geographically from mainland Southeast Asia. But after being in Minangkabau adjusted with a personality that colored view of life, namely Islam.
In those days not to mention the religion of Islam is pure in glory, because the influence of old beliefs and various philosophies espoused yet eroded out within them.
But in the martial arts heritage that shaped step Tigo and also called Silek Tuo, start by filling refined assessment of the various schools of Islamic ideology.
Disembark martial arts should not be indiscriminate. Schools of Al Hulul / Wihdatul Being role, especially in filling mysticism (inner martial arts). Tariqa (method) Al Hallaj are colored education elements of mystical philosophy of Pythagoras become a handbook for teachers to not lower silat martial arts to the indiscriminate people.

Number 3 as the "essence" to be confidential and should be kept. To guarantee confidentiality, then the martial arts was never recorded. In the experience and research done reality shows, that the mandate of "an assessment that is confidential" until now still apply to the old folks Minangkabau.
if now, the secret was revealed in a variety of pretexts, such as:
    a. will lead to future conflict with the doctrine embraced by the general public.
    b. will bring in danger as a result of "deck Tasaluek review", such as: crazy.
    c. and so on.

Tigo steps in Silat Minang, in which there is a perfect motions to face all possibilities that do the opposite. Calculation of number three with wird disejalankan and exercise, even this is not everyone can understand and practice it as mystical.
Kaifiat or its implementation is done while making strides Tigo concentration. every step of the emphasis on "Alif, Dal, Meme"
Tagak Alif, Pitunggue Adam, Step Muhammad
    Tagak Alif:
Portrait of God, horses for Adam, Kelit of Muhammad, Captured by Ali, and kicks along with the Angel. (Password key move)

    SILAT STEP Ampek
Silat formation Ampek Step by Datuk Suri Ninik Pariangan Kings in unison with the Silat Step Tigo. Silat Step Ampek, derived from the motions of martial arts and supervision Anjieng Mualim hereditary Tigers also handed over to the Campo, which can be transformed when wronged carry it.
Because the creators have a uniform form and method as well as filling. the martial arts began with Step Ampek Tagak Alif. The difference lies in the calculation of the number 4, as a special number (remember the mystic Pythagoras). Although the mystical and elusive to the layman, but for the fighters is believed to be the truth.
Opening Step on the concentration Ampek done Alif, Lam, Lam, Hu.

Calculation steps in Silat Minang the last one is nine. Where it came from the number nine. In the arts assessment is expressed as follows: Step 3 + Step 4 = Step 7. That is just trunks or tonggaknya calculations. The addition of two steps are:
Alif-Tagak hanging with an emphasis on "Illa Hu" signifies a single step.
-Mim Tasydid in the unity of Allah and Muhammad, prompting a decisive, meaning that one step.
According to the ideology of Al Hulul that if the nature of states themselves, or emitting light in the full reality: that's the beauty.
Fighter was an artist and an artist are sharp and eye gaze, which could see the beauty of the divine in him. (Gazalba, IV/1973: 527)
Silat Step nine is usually sung as "Pencak" (Minangkabau: Mancak), meaning: Dancing. In the compound word "Pencak Silat," intended "Tari Silat".
Nine steps to show the development of rhythmic movements, by not leaving the elements of martial arts movement".

Wow ... big cut and paste Narrue ... was it really necessary?
What the Tambo essentially says is that the origin of the silat is from SE Asian continent. It then goes on to say that through a process of assimilation and adaptation, it becomes the silat of the Minangkabau. It makes the case that silat has always been influenced from the outside.
Even at this juncture the researcher of the Tambo of the Minang People acknowledges the influence of the Chinese during the T'ang dynasty ...
Now in the quote above it states that Indrawarman and his father Lokita Warman were already muslim ... in the year 718 AD.
This is highly unlikely as the first recorded muslim in North Sumatra (not Minangkabau .. but in the Aceh area ... (from Wikipedia). Also it was the habit for Hindu & Buddhist kings to have Sanskrit names (e.g. Indrawarman) and muslim kings to adopt Arabic names (e.g Malik al Saleh) ... so maybe post-historic creative license!?
Mythos has it's place especially in oral traditions dates often are not very accurate.
All cultures I know have their share of legend that gives a certain 'colour' to the people and tradition.
However, I think there is some cultural prerogatives happening to stake a claim and say ... "silat begins here" ... when such cultural influences extend over centuries and over a large area ...

No one really knows the genesis of 'silat' (I would choose India and China plus the SE Asian region :)). To change the context, in my view the genesis of silat is the personal realisation of body-wisdom within the system one follows ... or as El Medico says so well, the realisation of shen-fa (from the Taiji thread on mechanics).

Btw ... the translation above has many errors and sometimes doesn't always make sense in the English making for tortured reading ) ... who did the translation; Google? Tambo means legend .. it is not about the "Tambo" people ...

Ok .. I just had a look at the original topic and this thread has gone waaaaay off track, plus it's old!
To answer the OP ... Is silat effective? The answer is NOOOOOO !!!

Silat is a collection of ideas that people have added to and subtracted from through history. Until they are used, ideas are not "effective" because they have no material substance, unless you call a book a collection of ideas ... and hit someone over the head with it!

What IS effective is the person. People can become effective when they make decisions to act on the information contained in ideas. If you don't "do" you will never be "effective".

The core of silat is to attain body knowledge or to be able to naturally move your body/mind to perform the activity of attacking and defending. It is a physical thing ... it is kridha (action). If you develop proper body knowledge for a style and you find it sits well with you; that is your silat, while core beliefs are your personal business.

Finally, silat does not make you invincible. I can shoot you with a rifle or hit you with bow and arrow, and no amount of silat is going to save yo ass ....

Hello all... ive not been commenting or posting here for a very long time. i went into a looooong hibernation haha..

All of you have so much knowledge of silat, i feel afraid to comment as someone bite my head off. But i hhope i will be able to counter that with a real silat technique hehe.

...just my 5 cents to answer the original post question..
So far my silat helped me hugely in 9 physical situations. once I used the concept of Tipu when attacked by two gansters on a bridge , one of them with a minora blade and the other holding a knife. I just pointed behind them and screamed "help" and when they looked around i ran away.. This secret technique is also known as "Langkah Seribu" meaning 1000 steps :)

What i can say of Silat is that YES if you train consistently and correctly it is effective. My teacher has blended Kuntao and Lintao silats to evolve into Pukulan melaka. My beloved Guru has never spoken much about the origins of silat to me, and he always advised us that Silat is effective whether it has chinese influence or not, because whats important is the reason why you learn silat - self defense? or not?

I personally feel that You should try silat out for a few lessons, and depending on your teacher, you will know very quickly whether silat is for you or not. I remember my first lessons i got a huge reality check on my chest, ears, my cheeks, legs, arms and joints all got one very strong message, that Silat is a combat art.

Thenice thing i like about silat is that there is beauty in it when expressed through the culture and heritage of the malays. maybe not all fantastic stories are true, but they kept me interested in learning more. and you can never know enough. the more you learn, the more you find out how little you know hey...

As long as you study martial arts, have fun, and like Rebo Paing suggested, that you have to get to know your body better and how to control it.

answering the question , is silat effective in real situation i agree with Rebo Paing, there is no perfect system that makes you superman , silat is a system, effectiveness is with its student like Pakarilusi said.
