    Seminar Run Down.

Throughout the whole day we were focusing on the Principles of Aikido and not technique, this is how we always practice but having all day to look at this was of great benefit to all.

The breakdown of the day was:

We started with 15mins of suburi which definitely got everyone warm and ready to go!

David Kyle then took the first class and we looked at the application of Aikido principles. This included good kamae, proper body alignment and use of kushushi over the temptation to chase technique. David’s Aikido is very precise and he done a great job emphasising these aspects of training.

I took the second class and looked at Sen timing and Maai, in particular breaking of (Sen) timing and (Maai) distance at misubi. This was one of the aspects of Sensei Coyle’s aikido which will really stick with me. When training, he would always do this with the minimum of effort and although I can’t say that of my own training, yet, I will keep trying to get there!

We then had a brilliant Kendo demonstration from Sensei Gerry Kincaid (6th Dan), showing us how kendoka use the ken sen and spirit to enter and make powerful cuts. The similarities between Kendo and Aikido principles were easy to see. He then went on to tell us a few stories about his Friday afternoon training sessions with Koyo using sword and Jo, then following into hand techniques. He commented on how his Aikido training has helped him in Kendo matches, especially at close distances.

This lead us nicely into Gerry McGee’s class where we looked at Kokoro kamae (spirit) and omote in both sword and hand techniques. Having watched the explosive power of the kendo guys everyone was keen to show similar spirit, even though we were all starting to get sore by this point. Gerry’s technique is very powerful and he done a great job showing these principles.

All and all it was a fantastic day and I’m sure Sensei Coyle would have been proud of us all, everyone there gave it there all, all day and it was much appreciated.

I would also like to thank Guy Ramsay from the Griphouse for letting us use his mats, it’s a really good venue and vey fitting being just down the road from where Koyo was born….Cheers Guy.

So as we said at the end of the seminar, the Makotokai will continue to train in the way we have been taught by one of the greats of British Aikido and as always the door remains open to all.

    Cheers,
    Chris.

Awesome stuff chris, 1st time Ive seen you and the guys doing your stuff. LOVED IT, makes you wonder how the hell others expect Aikido to work with out ATEMI and KIAI. For me the main thing was the massive importance on the sword strikes and its principles for control and mai. MORE PLZ

Hi Dento, thanks for the comment. Totally agree, don't know how some Aikido
Dojos expect techniques to be practical when they have little concept of atemi .

    I liked the vids Gerry.

Maybe you guys can make a series, along the lines of the Koyo's Book thread - in video - as a compliment to Bill's great presentation on MAP - continuing his work if you want.

Granted, not a simple task, but one I sure that he would be very greatfull for and appreciative of.

I guess you could post your request in the above thread also.
