I've got twelve hours of house-sitting to do so here's a thread for sambo videos. Soviet judoka and wrestlers like Khabarelli and Karelin are cool too. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dyXcU247JCg&feature=related"]1985 CCCP Sambo Archive Footage - YouTube[/ame] Great ideas and a fun video but as it's compliant there's little to no unbalancing in some of the throws, so there are some bits I don't particularly like. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lqqUhpywYM&feature=related"]Oleg Taktarov v Mark Kerr - YouTube[/ame] Not a sambo match, but a famous sambist showcasing the peculiar open guard and ducking jab (although not really my favorite example of the latter). [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bfXRswETb8"]Fedor Emelianenko LOSS vs Blagoi Ivanov (Bulgaria) Combat Sambo 2008 WC Semifinal - YouTube[/ame] One of Fedor's few (only?) losses in combat sambo to Blagoi Ivanov of Bulgaria. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-6ghrcTglk"]Vincent Beurrier vs David Juliano: Freestyle Sambo Superfight - YouTube[/ame] Last one in the set will be a freestyle sambo match. Sort of like sport sambo with more emphasis on groundwork. Fewer to no discretionary standups, fewer banned subs, chokes, etc. Also no "perfect throw", so you can't just dump someone and immediately win.
good idea for thread. He regularly travels to do seminars so if he is ever in your area I highly recommend you don't miss the opportunity to train with him. doing some instructing. Mr Kolganov is a bad man. I've seen that scissor entry plenty of times but that video really makes it come alive and assuming I get to try it before it fades in my memory I'm sure it'll be a staple for me from now on. Thanks. And that Kurinnoy video is one of my favorites. Watched it over and over. Lots of blur between hipthrow and pickups here. Also, go to 8.25 for a super sick uchimata/podhvot.
Here is a tasty little blog with some very interesting instructionals: http://real-sambist.blogspot.com/ and a sample of the vids on the blog: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J50pyV9Llio"]SAMBO サンボ 朽木倒ã—ã‹ã‚‰è†åå—1 СÐМБО - YouTube[/ame]
Satoko Shinashi and Megumi Fujii two great female MMA fighters with Sambo backgrounds. @Slip: I'm loving the dude in blue's gear. Looks like he's been rolling so long he sleeps in the stuff. One thing I've always noticed about Japanese instructors is that they're extremely expressive. You can usually tell what detail they're getting at even if you can't understand them. Do you know if those guys are related to the SomboLabo channel on YT? I don't get into the japanese groups so much but it looks like a similar atmosphere. @Tout Pret: Yeah, those two are great. Here's a sambo exhibition between the two. One of the sambo girls at the gym is all about some Shinashi. She's her favorite martial artist, I think. nice, if I was asked on the street id probably name satoko as my favourite female MMA fighter as well.

Sadly I'm probably closer to Russia and Japan geographically than most people... and yet... Sambo is nowhere to be found on the scene here. Lots of BJJ these days... but never have seen any Sambo here in Hong Kong. Snifffffff.
its kind of ironic considering the nature of there shared history over the last century that the place where sambo is most wide spread outside of Russia is America.
Same here. When I first discovered them I would have said Fujii but I don't recall why. There's Sambo in the states but not much around here. Most of the curriculum in the sambo program at my gym is imported, practiced, and then verified and ranked via contact with my coach's sambo coach.
Well a great deal of the propaganda in the soviet states was painting the idea that the soviet union wanted peace, AFAIK. So it's not that surprising that people would be inclined to emigrate, especially when the economy tanked and social unrest broke out in the early nineties.

Like many russian military demos that I've seen, the non-sambo bits (knife defense and scripted striking) leave something to be desired.
