I've had back problems for ages now, but just been to see the physio and she said the problem this time looks as though it could be ligament damage around the sacroiliac joint or something. Just wondering if anyone had similar problems and how they were treated? She also said there seems to be a pull in the ligaments between my 4 and 5 (I think) vertebrae . She mentioned stopping training for a while but I'm not quite qure I understand what she means Got an appointment with the orthopaedic specialist in August so hoping he will shed some light on it as I have a long standing lower back problem with my joints too Stupid backs!
Sounds like you are having some problems with the disc, that is between the bone. That can be serious, taking some time off of training and walking might be good. That is about 6 weeks off and by then if you do all the right thing's you might be better. Take some "motrin" for inflammation and try to relax the area. Some recommend a good stiff drink at night, to relax the muscles, others mention muscle relaxers. If you don't take this serious it will make you aware of your pain all the time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacroiliac_joint L4 and L5 are higher. http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=1508256 Check which way your hips go. I think that article should be stickied here as a lot of people get back pain due to an anerior tilt. Well most people I look at there head is forward.
I've done some work in physio on my pelvic allignment, this appears to be a new and additional problem! Thanks for the info though guys
Well, I saw the specialist last week and there aren't any disc problems or anything significant with my spine. The doc said it was more of a mechanical problem, but he is going to explain more to me when I go to see him with my scan results. I do have to go for an mri scan on my hip though. The pain now shoots right from my left hip through my pelvis and back. I used to get the pain in my back first then in the hip,but seem to get it independently now. Perhaps the scan may show something up. Its very painful when I get it,it usually clears up but is very random at the moment.
Hey Su Lin, as an osteopathic physician, I have treated a lot of sacral dysfunction. A lot of what you are describing sounds like a sacral torsion. Sometimes your pelvis can get "out of whack" and your sacrum then gets "stuck" in a position that it shouldn't be in. I think the have osteopaths over in England if I recall, but I think their practice is limited to just manipulation (over in the states we can prescribe meds, and be trained for surgery, anything a regular MD does) If the scan doesn't show any serious disc pathology, you may want to consider seeing someone for some manipulation. In the meantime, you can get a tennis ball, lay on your back, bend you knees so your feet are flat on the ground, place the tennis ball between your knees and squeeze really hard for about five seconds, relax and then do it again for a total of 3-5 times. That is a general technique to "re-set" your sacrum. Hope you get well soon! I would offer to treat you, but after flying over to Michigan, your back would be out of place by the time you got home!
Thanks Doc! Sounds like a plan! I think it may be Sciatica from what my physio has said in the past, sometimes it seems to go right into my foot.
hallo, ive recently decided to do something about the constant back pain too. I went to an osteopath and he told me that my left hip was out of alignment. It can be caused by lifting something incorrectly or having a sudden impact on one side. ie like falling off a bike going 40km/p down a hillside. once the ligaments and such whack ur hip bone out of place it causes back pain. also it distorts your spine and muscles on the other side gets tense and such to keep everything in place. anyway its taken me 5 weeks of treatments (the whole of July). they massage the tight muscles and do alot of manipulations to whack things back into place. unfortunately, during this process i was told not to stretch, no MA, no cycling, no standing on one leg - just walking and swimming. as an active person this was very frustrating. but im on the road to recovery - i been going to pilates for a couple of weeks now to rehabilitate my hips and stuff. i can go cycling, i still find crossing my legs a bit painful but not as bad and hopefully by next month i can go back to MA training.
apparently my osteopath said - left untreated over time (a period of 5years) ur going to be bent and stay bent and they wont be able to fix it.
Sure does, when you get a sacral torsion, the piriformis muscle can contract and get inflammed. The sciatic nerve is right next to the piriformis muscle and the inflamation causes sciatic pain. Su lin, I've seen your pictures, and you don't look like the typical "disc herniation" kind of gal (i.e. in good shape) but that doesn't mean the a herniated disc is also out of the question, if this continues maybe a CAT scan or an MRI? Hope you get well soon, sacral problems are a real pain in the butt!! (Pun intended!)
Thanks Doc Yeah I try and keep in shape, which is the annoying thing! I had Scheuermanns (sp) disease when younger,so the specialist said that may have messed my posture up and in turn my muscles etc. I didn't have any major treatment for it,I kind of grew out of it. I'm going for an MRI scan next week on my hip and pelvis ,so that may show something up.
