Gyaku Tski (reverse punch) and a mawashi geri (roundhouse kick)

Another good techniquie is to grab the kicking leg and push it hard away from you, so they loose balance. Then throw a reverse punch to the back. Not that hard to pull off, and in Kyokushinkai, you should get Ippon for it.

Got a tourny coming up Afro?

Front thrust kick, punches, backfists, pushing under the guise of blocking and blocking mawashi geris with elbows [could hurt you too ;)]

Points are scored by either a reverse punch or a front kick most often. The trick is timing, and committing to the technique. Usually the quickest point sparrer will win.

Different rule systems are going to favour certain strikes over others.

Something you might consider, if you haven't already, is the combined use of guard and pace.

If you make rapid, jerky movements, your opponent is likely to do the same, and keep their distance. Slow smooth movements may draw them closer.

Use your guard to dictate their attacking options, limiting them to attacks which offer an opening for your best trained counters.

Changing pace from slow to fast will often catch the inexperienced opponent unawares.

    Use sparingly.

Pick a limited range of techniques which play to your strengths and drill/refine them until you are sick of them, then drill them some more.

Watch other fighters and analyse them.

    That'll be 2 pence please. :D

    Get away with cheating!

If the back is not a scoring target in your rule system, find a legitimate way of turning it while countering.

e.g. Jumping Back Kick. Back Kick etc.

If you are to receive warnings before point deduction, use them.

e.g. If you are ahead on points, accidentally ( yeah right ;) ) leave the area allowing for a restart and wasting your opponents time.

Absolutely, relates to 'da street' too.

If breaking wind, or baring your privates creates an opening, then go for it. :D

FROM A TKD'ers perspective but still vlaid I feel.

Learn to read the fight before you start.

If your opponent has a reach advantage a straight line assualt is not the answer - use the angles. If you taller.....

Dominate! Be aware of ring position at all times. Don't be bullyed be your opponent. Take the middle of the ring and dictate the pace of the game.

Know your ranges! Practice with opponents who have different ranges. Learn what areas you can be hit with what - arms, elbows, legs. Once you know what options are avialable to oppenents you can plan your offensive more effectively.

    STOP TELEGRAPHING! Practice in front of a mirror.partner to watch what you do when you are about to attack;

    PICK YOUR POINTS.
Don't just blast away hoping something will land. Set the opponent up with other techniques to open up your true target. Visulise the strike area and hit it with conviction. Avoid aimlessly blasting at your opponents guard. It's impossible to guard everything at once..... use that to your advantage. Practice by "vocal sparring". Get a partner and yell out potential open areas, your opponent should cover them as soon as you shout, which will leave another area open. Use this to learn how defences change.

    Do you...

    Blink?
    Attack on an up bounce?
    Make uneccessary moves with body?

Practice "hiding" techniques until your opponent can do nothing about it!

SMILE! - believe it or not it reduces most of the facial cues that you are about to attack! ;)

    NEVER GIVE IN.

Even if you getting thrashed. Body language says a lot. Keep the head and spirits up and keep plugging. At the very least you'll learn some valuable lessons from someone who is better.

    BE GRACIOUS IN DEFEAT.

One that used to work nicely for me was to invite someone in by acting submissive (crunch up with a tight guard and lean away). This often invites a punch to the head that they will have to lean into to get their distance (in this position your body is covered from kicks and your head is too far away to kick).

When they do use a side or back kick into their exposed side with your lead leg.

It;s a nice little counter fighter tactic and can "sting" a confident fighter.

    Give it a try!!!

Combiunations, fools! Almost nobody uses combinations at the open tournaments I've attended and they always lost to our combinations. Find moves that can naturally proceed another, then string them together in different combinations. Make anywhere from 3-10 variations of combinations you come up with then practice them until they're fast and natural. Your opponent will be OVERWHELMED.

For example, on combo i like to use is front kick, roundhouse, back kick, spinning back fist coming out of back kick, reverse punch, front kick, knife hand to the head, reverse punch, ridgehand. I know it's hard to imagine but the idea is if u CAN keep going, DO IT!
