    Hi there.

I'm not necessarily new to exercise, as I've been doing my own regime with different types of cardio, team sports and my own individual training and lost 35 lbs over the course of 1.5 years, however I want to step it up to the next level. I'm a 35 year old adult and looking for advice on how I should choose a martial arts facilities and would appreciate your advice.

I've checked out three facilities that offer the following:

Studio 1: Muay thai, fitness conditioning, BJJ, and Boxing. Cost is $129/mo CAD (or 100 USD) on a 12 month contract or $200 CAD ($150 USD) . They also offer a one-time equipment package for $130. Classes around around 20-30 people of all ages (I did a trial yesterday). However, I found the facility slightly dirty and worn out. They have a basic fundamentals class for each of muay thai, BJJ and boxing and then a mixed level class after that. In addition, their workout area seems a bit worn out. Open Mon to Sat.

Studio 2: They offer muay thai, MMA, kickboxing, boxing and other fitness classes. These are all mixed level classes, but the facility is really clean and most of the coaches are pro-am athletes. Classes are around 15-20 ppl, mostly adults. Cost is $80/month ($60 USD) on a 12 month contract or $200 CAD ($150 USD) and a really good workout area. Not sure about equipment cost. Open Mon to Sat.

Studio 3: I haven't been to a class here yet (though I checked out the facility since they are in partnership with a facility), but they are advertising $60 CAD/month ($46 USD - not sure if this is contract or not) since they are new but have Thai boxing, MMA, BJJ/Combat Sambo and you get 24/7 access to the gym. Facility is average cleanliness.

    So my questions are:

    a) Which studio would you recommend for a beginner? I like studio 1 because of how it is structured, but it just seems worn out to me and a bit unappealing, however studio 2 is cool because it offers all different types of things yet studio 3 is the cheapest.

    b) What is a good discipline for self defense? I tried krav maga a few weeks ago but didn't like the general "negative energy" compared to martial arts studio that offer varying disciplines.

    Thanks all for your help.

Thanks. Your compliment is exactly why I think these types of martial arts places is the manners/energy I want. When I went to a krav maga place, all the role playing encouraged swearing and violence to pretend you are in a real life situation. In the area I live, there really isn't that much negative energy and I need positive energy, of course to each their own.
