I'd always thought of body shot KO's as being pain related. I therefore kept body attacks pretty low on my preferred list of targets for self-defense, because I didn't want to emphasize anything that requires pain to work, when the guy might be in a condition where pain is dulled or non-existent. This article talks about how the liver shot (or that of any internal organ, though the liver is easier to get to) causes a drop in blood pressure, and might even cause unconsciousness. I thought that was cool, so I'm sharing.

i've actually taken a hard one in the liver. i would have rather the boxer in question broken my nose. i've torn my acl and dislocated a shoulder (a couple times); the liver shot was the worst experience of my life.

I've been kicked very gently in the liver and that was enough for me to never want to experience a hard shot there.

I've never been knocked down with a liver shot (yet....I'm sure its coming soon). However, one the guys I train with has been hit with it before and he says

"If I ever get KO'd again, I rather be it a headshot rather than the liver. You can't breath, your eyes well up, you go fetal and it feels like the World is collapsing around you"

I also haven't dropped anyone with it either. The closest was when I gave an uppercut to the solar plexus, he took a while to recover from that. (I think theres a video of me being folded in half with a round kick to the gut, will find and post when I can)
I'm assuming that being struck in the liver is a similar kind of feeling but more intense?

The sudden feeling of being sick as well as not being able to breath, forcing you to go on all fours trying to recover.

I didn't feel sick (like I say it wasn't a hard shot though) I just felt this pain around the area it landed and my entire body just shut down as I dropped to a knee. Its the only time I ever remember my body being overcome with an instinct to curl up and protect myself.

I've been dropped by a liver shot in Kyokushin sparring. I wasn't unconscious but my bodies response of just immediately dropping to my knees once I felt it was really quite scary, I wasn't expecting it to be that efficient in putting me down considering it was not a very hard blow.

    Really nasty experience!

For the sake of show and tell (and my mum's hilarious comments) I present the effects of an incredibly tame liver shot at about 0:58

What I hate is the delayed onset, the "oof, I'm fine, I'm fine".... and then your gut implodes and your legs collapse.

Another personal fave "Winky" Wright (simply one of the best and most underrated boxers ever to lace gloves) taking it to Steve Foster. To be fair Foster was a low to mid card fighter who got his moment of glory and was never in the fight but he was really durable and tough....but watch from 21:18 onwards and see how that bodyshot simply does not go away!

I believe so...Ricky took bodypunching to a whole new level. I've seen him up close in training and he was so damn fast

I think next to a Floyd type defense ... Winky's would be my next choice of how to not get hit flush, uses the jab over and over like one should and just makes guys not want to punch. I was sad for him to retire.
