I always plan my parties fairly far in advance. Right now I have plans for a Barbecue on July 3rd. But there's a big space between July and Halloween, so I need some ideas on a party theme for something in that time period. Some parties I've thrown before: Halloween Costume Party Birthdays Barbecue Mardi Gras Party Casino Night Mask Party Anybody have any great suggestions? What party themes have worked for you in the past? (All parties are adults only, with much premium liquor)
Toga parties are overdone though. I was looking for more original stuff. I'd like to avoid "era" parties and common themes.
One year for my birthday we had a wine tasting where each guest brought a bottle of wine in a paper bag. We numbered them and made up judging forms; things like 1 being ambrosia, 5 being "I prefer water", for instance. It was very fun because one had to, of course, taste each of the wines and several of them several times. It was all very low key and not snooty at all. One guest wrote lovely poems about his favorites. Toward the end of the evening we unveiled the bottles and shared our feedback. For the record, a $4 Malbac won, hands down. The next year we did a beer tasting following a similar procedure. That year there were kids, too, so they did a grape juice tasting. I had a good time anyway!
get a cheap sandbox, have people bring their own umbrellas and other beach gear, make a little camp fire and decorate it in a beach theme and Wa-La
Hang a huge white tarp in your back yard, buy buckets of water soluble paints and get everbody outside in cheap clothes with cheap booze and cover that tarp up. That sounds totally sweet.
Hawaiian pig roast. I've been to one of those, it was the brown stinky stuff. They dug a hole, lined it with rocks, built a fire on the rocks, cooked the fire down to coals, covered the mess with palm leaves, chucked a pig in a burlap sack in the whole and buried the whole mess for like 30 hours. It was delicious. Drinking + paintball. Probably a very bad idea, but probably fun. Can anyone tell I'm southern yet?
You plan a *long* way in advance! Is a Mask Party the same as a Masquerade? Can't remember ever being to an especially original party. Just the usual summer stuff like Hawaian. Mafia Party? Australian Party? New Zealand Party (what?! exactly) Could dry different eras: 1920s would be cool, but probably overdone.
If you wanna have a laugh give all your friends invites that have different themes on the invitation and tell them to keep it a secret. That way every one arrives dressed for a different occassion. So tell some friends its a: -Toga -70's -Pimps and H.... -Black and White -Hobbo -Hawaiian -Celebrities -Formal -Casual You'd get a great laugh out of it when everyone arrives looking confused because each person is dressed for a different theme, especially once the drinks begin!!
