An interesting point Matt. Perhaps self defence/protection should be termed martial science. The art is getting the science right. This does get down to "which style is best" kind of arguement. Essentially all MA have something to offer and thus are "effective" within thier own ranges. What is vitally important is the way that the MA is taught.
