Nope. The character was named after the founder of Goju Ryu Karate (the writer of the movie was a Goju Practicioner and the Technical Karate consultant was one of the Yagi family from the Meibukan <a goju org> ) Incidentally mny of the techniques in the movies (i.e Wax on Wax off, Paint the fence, etc) are in Goju <along with some other styles> Here is a link to an Ishinnryu website with a quote from that site right below it http://mikeblum.8k.com/hist.htm "Shimabuku wanted to further his knowledge and skill. He sought after another legend, Chojun Miyagi. Miyagi was the founder of Gojuryu Karate (the "hard/soft style). Gojuryu is a mix of Naha-te and Pa Kua Ch'ang. Shimabuku became one of Miyagi's best students. Incidentally, the "Karate Kid" character was named after Chojun Miyagi. On October 8th, 1953 Chojun Miyagi died" Dale
yup goju ryu is the style used by Mr Miyagi. My Uncle, who is also my sensei even did the tensho kata which was the technique used in part 3 of the trilogy
