I didn't realise this was being filmed. We must have left the camera running while others were getting suited.

Whoever is inside that armour seems a bit of a poseur.

    Right on the snotbox.

Nice overhand left from Andy, who deserves a lot of thanks for being such an excellent sport.

Poor fella got hit on the nose at least 4 times and kicked in the groin twice.

I think he went home and dangled certain parts in an ice bucket.

Double stick isn't my area of expertise, but I wanted everyone to sample it.

There are gaps in the single stick (half beats) that aren't there in the double stick.

Excellent quote at the end of this clip.

This was the final match of the day and is just a brief section of a two minute fight.

Many thanks to Simon for a really well-structured day of constructive training
    - also a lot of fun !
A full day meant he was able to give us a decent grounding in the basic strikes/blocks working at different ranges, disarms(and counters)as well as the terminology and origins of the art.
As Simon said, special thanks to his senior student Andy,a very capable assistant whose small adjustments in our partner work showed a depth of knowledge that made a big difference to the effectiveness of what I was doing.
This despite copping at least two "low" kicks ,one of which I was responsible for - sorry Andy !
It was a great introduction to an art that I'd like to a pursue further and develop alongside the other stuff I do,which for me that is the beauty of martial arts - as my sifu says, like making your own jacket.

Hopefully if another similar event is organised it could be a real blast with enough participation.
It's quite surprising how quick you get used to full power striking and getting hit, once you're using the full protection.
Just as fun is the padded stick with basic head/hand protection which has the advantage of being able to combine with punches, kicks and throws.

Props to Simon for the time and effort involved, which shows his commitment and enthusiasm for what he does

    Thank you, Ned.

Aegis and I have already discussed doing this again maybe in September or October.

Long enough past the main MAP Meet, but plenty of time before Christmas.

Hopefully the second video will be up in an hour or so.

Eyes are now popping out of my head. I've been editing since the early hours.

I can speak for Andy when I say he also got a lot out of the day, especially in regard to the responses you gave him during the sparring.

    Part II.

Double stick against single stick. Two onto one and an introduction into full armour.

Final video tomorrow, where all participants do their full contact rattan stick sparring.

    Final video for today.

I'm going to post the full contact matches individually because I think the participants deserve to see them in full after all their hard work.

    First up is Ned.

I put on some pressure, then eased off to allow Ned to do his own thing.

The pleasing thing for me was that the strikes we'd practiced throughout the day were put to good use.

Here is Jackie's fight in full armour.

Really impressed with this. After just a few hours training and in a completely alien environment she is using the strikes taught throughout the day and making good use of the live hand to try and trap my striking hand.

Also a nice mix of high and low strikes.

Mascarenhas' venture into padded armour sparring.

Very difficult to create angles with curved (Kurbada) strikes when your in close and have only been shown fairly straight blows.

Another excellent job here after a few hours training.

Some instructors won't have new starters sparring, but I've always disagreed and said it's possible on their first lesson. These videos prove why.

Totally agree. As long as the student seems ok (in the head like) throw them in at the deep end, even if it is just attacking and defending with one angle.

And lets be honest, that's what most people want in a class (Customer service).

Just a few fights left. We really did get through a lot and shot a load of video.

Here we have Mascarenhas v Ned.

Loads of success on both sides with head strikes, then dropping down to a horizontal strike (plansa) across the midsection.

I think this video shows how well everyone took on board what was shown throughout the day and the way confidence was built up.

    Ned v Jackie.

What I like here is when they get close they're both trying the close quarter stuff we'd worked earlier in the seminar.

    Edit : phone Glitch

Also I have to say I really like neds mix of Taiji stuff into weapons work. He got me on my bum a few times with the sweeps and the mix of strikes really rocked me (not as much as the helicopters overhand, advice for everyone: a punch to the face is greater than a stick to the body)

Well there you are, the entire day in video and I must say that while everyone has been full of praise for Andy and Myself we were really pleased with the way the day went, the way the participants took on-board the instruction and the way they went about the training with a completely open mind.

Hopefully you can see the progression they all made and the way the day was structured to lead up to the armoured sparring.

The sparring with padded sticks is great fun. You get a bit of a sting, but it doesn't leave marks and the risk of injury is low if you are respectful of each other.
