Xubis has started a Martial Arts Planet team to help scientists search for cures to diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease. You don't have to be a scientist or computer expert to participate (thankfully!) - all you need to do is download the software from the following location : http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html and enter the MAP team number after installation (38887) http://folding.stanford.edu/ has more details on what the project is about, and you can view the MAP team's contribution here : http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=38887 There is also a discussion thread on distributed computing on this forum http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18621 many thanks to Xubis.
Yikes! I'll be with you in a few. I had an old system collecting dust so I decided to slap Linux on it and see how it works, unfortunetly my ISP uses a unix/linux tcp/ip based network so when I set it to dhcp it took the forced settings and assumed it was a node in the network (I'm sure they loved my attempts to get root ). Anyhow, now that I've figured it out I just need to fix the problem and I'll be with you shortly.
About 2 years back i started folding for another community(Austech.info). I got involved because they had these cool pictures beside your username of what your score was. Maybe MAP should put in something like that. Alot of users probably haven't seen this thread. If you put military like ribbons next to each person's username then more people will be aware and think "Hey that looks cool, how do i get that?" Work it out the same way you do forum posts. When you reach a certain milestone you get a new title. EDIT: Austech have taken out these rank, i just checked. They have replaced it with sigs displaying all the user details. WUs, score, team etc...
I am planning on it! It kinda reminds me of that "Seti" deal with searching for aliens! Its a great idea to allow anyone to help contribute with their own computer. Gruhn
