This is a very fascinating video. Traditional Shaolin kung fu, and by traditional kung fu I mean the one used for fighting, not the sport one.

right heres a special treat for you all! this is a rough version of the new 2008 promo video for our club. I have been working on it for about a week and its still needs alot of work was hoping you lot might be albe to give me some good ideas to improve it. Obveously the video will go on our website and hopefully encourage new members.

As i said this is a rough version so I would really appreciate any HELPFUL or CONSTRUTIVE comments!

    enjoy ! :)

If this is a promo vid for your school I would lose the bloopers. Sure they happen at every school but they're not good promotional material.

In creative writing, when authors want to create excitement, they often use shorter sentences. You can see the film equivalent in exciting, short clip montages. So, I would suggest really editing right down to short clips of the most exciting moments - snap, snap, snap... then a longer bit of form, then snap, snap, snap... and get in sections, like, some fast shots of applications, then snips of fancy kicks, etc.

I really liked the slow mo after the main shot idea - really works.

Well, that's what i'd do - it's your project! Trust your talent.

Oh and I like bloopers - I'd put a few bloopers in, but I'd change the music to Laurel and Hardy music or something - just to show that it's all in good humour, and you're aware it's not something most clubs would put in.

    I thought it was cool.

The only thing I thought was off was some of the pad work. I'd reshoot that padwork that was the most zoomed in and get the guy on the pads to just go a bit harder, bit snappier, bit sharper. He looked kinda like he was going about 50% and a bit tired maybe.

Other than that, looked choice. As someone who's never seen Lau Gar, it gave me a good idea of what you guys were about.

    i dont get it??

Why do all the practicioners in hung gar look like they are in pain and real intense when they are in form? Like this guy for example

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=-VQW55fdJxA&feature=related

And everyone of them uses the exact same hand sign. Y'know the one where the indes finger and thumb are out and the other fingers are closed kind of like the picture of the hand i have up Why is that? And always why do some people criticise modern wushu but love trditional kung fu? Isnt it all the same, except that techniques have adapted better over the years along with everything else that changes in life?

All Hung Gar guys don't grimace in pain when doing sets LOL. It just happens that the vid you posted is a more theatrical version of Fu Hok(Tiger and Crane).

Here is a brief version of Fu Hok where the flow is more or less how it usually is practiced.

The''One finger pointing to heaven'' is a traditional symbol that was used by Ming loyalist revolutionaries when at the time Shaolin Gung Fu was prohibited by the Ching Empire. The symbol was a way to show brotherhood and unity. It has been utilized in the Hung System as a way to honor the roots of the style.
There have been some debates on it's actual usage at one time or another.
It's probable that the actual hand was a Tiger claw and the finger was added later.
Check out the Mark Ho vids in the resources for some insight to the finger as well as some sound Hung Gar Kuen Knowledge in general.

My contribution then would be to re-film the staff sequence. Get whoever is attacking to, well, just an idea but maybe Attack!? And aim the shot meant for the head at the head. At the moment they are just hitting stick on stick. It's obvious they are just learning it so maybe a senior should do it if it's for promotional use.

Not a complaint as such but what's with all the tornado kicking? I know it looks cool and is fun but how about showing some other kicks that we use in lau gar?

thanks for the feed back :)

yeah, staff routine was just being learned when i filmed that so it wasnt meant to be full pelt. i was thinking i didnt look quite right as well, some of it oculd be used if the clips were trimed down a bit to just the faster parts.

The tornado kicks and stuff are more something that i happend to have alot of on film already and i havnt yet filmed all the bits i need to complete the video and also obveously its more representative of the kickboxing side of the class. your right though a few hook kicks and stuff would be nice!
    thanks

Chiu Chi Ling Looks very tense or to much hard it looks like a training video he is doing. You know I once watched something where he sparred Bruce Lee. The one you put up Banditshaw looks allot better to me more fluid and you can see the mix of hard and soft.

For the record when I said theatrical it wasn't a slight on Master Chiu. I have seen him play it different before. The vid that was posted was shot in a cinematic manner and emphasized a harder play on the set.

I don't think you was saying anything negative, and it does not come of that way on your post either. He I think for a few years was in the film industry though. He is definitely a very skilled Hung Gar'est!
