It will depend on which exercises you want to do. I started with a 16kg one, and it worked fine.

I live in staffordshire, UK. I was gonna get the enter the kettlebell book by Pavel T and work on the stuff in there as a starting point.

My advice - shop around - look on the Internet for offers especially from shops that are near enough so you can travel there - shipping costs for kettlebells can be NASTY !!!

My best buy was a 16Kg one...

    I went into a shop...

    Picked it up...

    Said, "This feels light"

The gentleman there weighed it and it wasn't 16Kg it was 15Kg...

    I got a discount :)

    Ebay 'base fitness'

Cast iron bells ok quality, no p+p, under 2pound a kg.

Argos use to do cast iron maximuscle ones quite cheap. Also, if you are gonna follow a proper KB routine I'd go for a lighter one (12kg max) until you get your technique down. Last thing you want with KB's are bad habits as these will very easily screw up your body.

If you want to keep your arm straight, swing it behind, over, infront of your head, and then drop between your legs, 16 Kg may be too heavy for that. It could hurt your shoulder joint when you move a big circle like that.

If you don't make any big circle drills, 16 Kg will be just fine.

If you add them on facebook they do some great deals, I got myself a 28kg one for twenty three quid including postage.

I use logs and medicine balls so i dont have anything to add except that i saved a lot using an old tire and a sledge hammer as well as different sized logs as "primitive" exercise equipment.

Are garage/yard sales common in your area? I got my first dumbbells cheap at a yard sale, so you may get lucky going that route. :)
