it's a lineage of shorin ryu. there are a lot of them (in fact shotokan could be considered an extreme one)
As I understand it "Shorin" is derived from the Japanese/Okinawan word for "Shaolin". So, I guess we are all connected in this sense. Gary
yeah, but shorin generally refers to the shuri-descended schools, and, iirc, is the style that evolved from the teachings of bushi matsumura, as opposed to the "shorei" schools taught around naha, now continued in ****o, goju, to'on, etc
Isn't "****o" Mabuni's blend of both worlds (ie Naha and Shuri)? I've got to say; out of the other major styles, "****o" is probably closest to what I do. Gary
yes, but it's not a shorin style, it's a blend that conserves naha-te as well as other lineages* *the kihon is also mostly identical to that of goju, save small diferenceslike a shuri style yoko uke
The whole Shorin/Shorei (Shuri/Naha) distinction is a little artificial, but useful all the same. That acknowledged, Wado & Shotokan clearly have their primary roots in Shorin-ryu. ****o-ryu supposedly has a foot in either camp. There are however many styles that can be classed as Shorin-ryu, rather than an offshoot (ie. Wado, Shotokan). Matsubayashi is one such style, ie. Shorin rather than an offshoot. Of course, its all semantics! Mike

The Shorin Ryu Naihaichi in the first post makes me cringe. Try this one instead. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkSr5-iM-BI&feature=related"]YouTube - Chshin Chibana - Naihanchi Shodan[/ame]
