Very interesting video showing sensei Kanazawa doing the goju kata "seiunchin". Not often you see inter-school propagation of kata in karate. Mr Kanazawa seems to be one of the few who's happy to have a crack at anything.

kanazawa's actually incorporated seienchin, seipai and kyan-ha chinto (as gankaku-sho) into the SKIF kata repertoire, although i don't know exactly how he handles them in terms of the overall curriculum.

That's interesting. I'd never heard of gankaku sho until you mentioned it then.

Funky looking kata. A bit more "Chinese" looking in its form than most shotokan kata.

I seem to recall that he felt that people should change the Kata they did as they got older, and that different Kata were better for different body types, ages, levels of mobility etc.

Harcore warm up. These Russians do a pretty tough warm up drill!

    Is Kanazawa slowing down finally?
Couple of times in that kata he lost his balance.
Obviously I never lose my balance during kata. :)

It's not often you see a WKF match that achieves what the rules are clearly set out to promote - a fast, fluid, high-scoring, risk-taking, spectator sport. But I think this pretty much nails it.

    Hi Shotokan_Italy,

Please take this in the spirit of constructive criticism, as it is very brave to post videos online and I admire anyone who is willing.

I thought that both of those kata lacked something. You chose two kata that are particularly "heavy" - they need to be solid, sturdy and performed with low and solid stances. Those performances were light and a little wobbly.

For my money, sochin should look like this:

Obviously, most of us mere mortals may not reach that standard, but it's something to aim for.

I'd echo mooseys comments , both looked a little soft for the kata chosen , out of interest , what grade were the people performing ?

    Hi Moosey, Mark,
thanks for your replies. In fact we get similar comments from our Sensei. Concerning myself (in the hangetsu video) i'm studying this kata since a few months only, and i'm still struggling with the breathing and contractions.... I have recently passed the 2nd dan examination, hangetsu is one of the 4 katas (with empi, jitte, tekki nidan) among which I had to chose my "tokui" - I chose jitte. However, I have to study all 4 before I can submit for the following grade. For this reason your comments are very welcome!

other katas that we have "consolidated" more in our dojo are, for example, bassai-sho and gojushiho-sho; the 3 folks in the following videos, for example, have taken part in some competitions with these katas.
