I pulled my Juka Emerald 100% cotton gi out of the washing machine to discover that a corner of the jacket had literally melted. I didn't know 100% cotton could melt at cold water temperatures and I'm guessing this material is a cotton/poly blend which would explain why it melted. has anyone ever had this happen to their gi? :hat:

Was it the actual woven part of the gi or just the brand logo on the corner?

    You need one of these:

No... it was the bottom left corner of the gi which should be 100% cotton.

I take Shotokan karate and I don't think that gi would be acceptable. Do you have any other traditional gi recommendations?

I figured man, that's a BJJ gi, and it's pretty bad-ass, but because you asked nicely, I'll see if I can find one for you :)

At least it doesn't have "TapouT" on it, I point blank refuse to wear that brand.

I hate to tell you man, but your gi is probably not 100% cotton.

There's only two ways you can convey a sense of badassitude just by wearing a gi. The first is to wear a gi so old and worn it is covered in patchwork and all the text on it has faded into nothingness.

    The second is this:

Wearing this while entering the dojang on a matching Hayabusa motorcycle... that'd be BAD!!!!!

    This is true.

  16. Cotton does not melt in water, whatever the temp.
But plastic does not melt in cold water either.

What precisely happened and under what circumstances here?
The mark on the picture indeed looks like some sort of melting happened, but there seems to have happened under some pressure and shear forces, like something hot and heavy (was "swiped" forcefully on it, or like someone wearing the Gi leaned and rubbed on a stove edge...

I don't think this happened in the washing machine...

    OSu!

Yeah, no way that happened in cold water. Looks like a hot iron or something of the like. Also looks like you go ripped off, as that is clearly not 100% Cotton.

Shureido is the gold standard. Tokaido, Hirota and Kamikaze are pretty close.

Yep, the Shureido was just coming in and a few of the guys had them.

OP how old is your gi, and is it a 14oz? I've seen something like that on my heavyweight gi but it was a long time ago and can't remember what, hot wash, detergent, heavy water...
