I have heard a few times that hung ga kung fu is the shaolin system most like karate. How is this so? What is this notion derived upon? (ie. techniques, forms, tradition) If so, what system of karate does it most resemble?

    Nah,
Ngo Chor Kun (Five Ancestors), White Crane, Tai Tzu/ Tai Chor (Emperor Fist), Yong Chun (Yong Chun Village White Crane) that's where Okinawan Karate (Pangai-Noon, Goju-Ryu, Sh1to-Ryu, Uechi-Ryu etc) comes from.

Most Karate Forms are a facsimile of Stuff transfered from Hokkien (Fujian) systems, whole wodges of White Crane techniques were incorporated, Sanchin was from Five Ancestors, as well as other forms and techniques etc etc.

Can't really see a Hung Gar/ Karate connection other than some of the stance work would look similar in passing. And as Hung Gar originated in Cantonese Southern China, transmission is less likely.

Read the translations of The Bubushi to get more info on this subject=

Either Pat McCarthy's version published by Tuttle or George Alexanders version. It's a good read and will answer a lot of questions regarding Karate Origins and what systems Okinawan Karate is most like.
