How long does a sprained finger need to be splinted?

So, I jammed my left ring finger learning gymnastics. :bang: At the doc's office, they splinted it and told me to use the RICE protocol (rest, ice, compression, elevation), but didn't give me a time estimate for healing. (xrays didn't turn up a break or anything) How long do I need to keep this thing splinted before I should get worried and call the doc? Thanks!

How do we know? We haven't examined your finger.

    Call and ask your doctor!

I can only say how I handle things like that and that for sure isn't a medical advise.

I change the bandage and splint regularly, renew the ointment and wait for a while.
After a week or so I try leaving the bandage of a while and see, how it feels.
Then it depends: Splint back on, only bandage, bandage of - for a time and slightly moving or off for good, or everything back on and waiting another week.

The best thing for sure is obviously asking the Doc, as Bozza Bostik has said.
The above is my personal "stupid way" to handle things ;)

Until it doesn't hurt anymore. Then buddy tape it for another month or so.
