London and Brighton marathon cancelled, I've seen many other sporting events cancelled. It seems a lot of organisations are following the scientists rather than the politicians.

Luckily my cough was just another morning asthma cough i get which cleared up, but given how quickly it spreads i can't imagine i will be able to avoid it for long.

Any child with a new cough or fever is being told to stay off school for 7 days.

In light of today's declaration of emergency in the US, I'm of the opinion that my sensei should shut down the dojo for 1-2 weeks. He's concerned that there's no reason to expect the situation to get better anytime soon, which means restarting classes would be disingenuous while keeping the doors shut for several months is financially untenable. Most significantly, his past observation is that for most students, interruption of training - even if they enjoy it - is all it takes to fall off the wagon and never return. What are your thoughts on whether it's appropriate to remain open, and if not, what's a compelling argument to override his concerns of crippling erosion of student base?
    Thanks!

Seems like soon it will be mandatory to close down. My own instructor is still open as of today but I expect by the end of the week it's going to change either by him or the government. It's a popular place with 60+ people on the mats at the same time.

Yes, there is a statewide ban on gatherings larger than 500 people. Numerous concerts and Broadway shows canceled through April I believe. The goal of all this, so I'm told, is to slow the impact on the ambulatory and hospital emergency systems, which right now can deal with the current intake of patients, but would quickly become overwhelmed otherwise. It's hard to fathom that at some point triage decisions may lead to unnecessary deaths, but apparently that's where we are at unless people follow social distancing, disinfecting, and most of all proper hand washing guidelines. Stay safe and healthy folks!

just had a thought. Next week I need to fo to the dentist to get a permanent crown put on my tooth and the following week is knee surgery. I now wonder if either of those are going to happen.

Honestly doctor's offices and surgical facilities are the safest places in terms of exposure, if they follow standard procedures. The risky places will be anywhere you are elbow to elbow or packed in...concerts, sports events, theater, and even gyms. I read that Chinese gyms were a major infection source in Wuhan.

Potentially they may postpone your surgery, planned orthopaedic surgery is being postponed in the UK so as to free up beds/staff, with the surgeons being deployed straight to A/E to help sort the non infected patients.

But that's with socialised medicine, in the US i imagine it won't be organised nationally.

Your dentist may also close so as to reduce their chance of getting it.

Id contact them both a few days before to check.

I'm not worried about getting it, I'm worried they will postpone it...and that dang temporary crown is painful

They are postponing elective surgery to free up beds, but my knee is outpatient surgery, I get to go home when they're done. Dentist called me a couple days ago to confirm the appointment but that was before the president, the governor and a couple county supervisors declared a state of emergency.

Got an e-mail from the the orthopedic surgeons saying everything was a go yesterday, but that is a week and a half away so that could change. That one does not bother me so much, but the dentist would, my tooth with the temporary crown hurts

^ generally even with outpatient surgery, they keep a few inpatient beds ready for anyone who reacts Badley to the anesthesia/ something goes wrong...

They should contact you before hand anyway, but a quick call to surgeons secretary a day or two before hand could be a good idea

It’s basically business as usual at my dojo. As classes are typically quite small with an average attendance of 2-3 students per session, my instructor opted to remain open. The only difference is that we Lysol the equipment after training.

No combatives or two person forms allowed at my school now. Sparring class consisted of shadow boxing and bag workout drills. Push hands turned into another forms class. Focusing on forms not usually taught in classes. Right now, most of us regulars are just grateful for every day the school is open as the reality of it being shut down for a period of time is seeming more and more likely every day.

My workplace, Library system, just closed to the public until at least April 5th. I never even ever conceived of a situation like this happening ever. Monday we are still to show up at work. We will do bookdrop and answer phones. There is other work that can be done. Not sure how it will play out, but I have been told benefited staff (which I am) will be paid regardless. But hourly staff won't. We will see how it plays out. The situation seems to be changing rapidly all the time.

The guan I was going to for push hands just announced that they are only going to work on forms, no sparing, no applications.

They just closed all the restaurants and all the shops except for food, drug stores, gas stations and some necessities. We've been outside today on a bike and scooter, watching birds, went of a birdwatching trip yesterday. Just now I read the government is thinking about a complete quarantine for everyone, meaning people can go to jobs and shops, but other than that stay at home and no roaming the streets without a purpose - that purpose basically being one of the allowed ones. If they really forbid even going outside, they will even prevent me to go birdwatching, which I was sure they can't. Wow, I'll just be sitting at home and drawing all the time it seems. Luckily, I really hope they can't prevent me from spending time in our garden at least -_-

    Damn.

The restrictions apply from Wednesday 18th - the day I was due to depart Heathrow.

Gutted doesn't begin to describe how I'm feeling.

However, I can appreciate that I am in good health living in a developed country with a stable infrastructure, so I'll get over it.

Hope all other Mappers are doing OK wherever you are right now.

I'm finding instructors/gym owners a bit of a pain at the moment. Seen multiple complaints today of people stopping their memberships for the month because classes are cancelled or because of self isolations and I get it, I get gyms are passion businesses and its an owner's livelihood at the end of the day. But, also at the end of the day, I know that me personally if I get made to self isolate I don't know how I'll pay my rent so I'm definitely not going to be forking out for a gym membership I won't be using. Reminding people the gyms need funds and, if you can afford, please consider paying up this month to keep the doors open is absolutely fine but mostly what I'm seeing is a lot of straight up bitterness that people are having to make hobby sacrifices to balance their budgets.

Like, my old gym is running around £80-£90 a month for the membership I used to have. Even without the loss of earnings I'd have a hard time justifying paying that if I know I'm not going to use it that month, yet alone that huge an expense when I may be losing half a month's wages.

Gym/dojo owners should think about maybe doing free sessions/seminars after this virus has run it's course (whatever that may be) if they want support while noot being open.
    That's what I'd do.

And students should think about where they will go and train after this is over if they don't support their gyms and they have to shut.
