how far do you push the pain?

    Well, actually they DO stretch, it's just usually a bad thing since they don't have the kind of elasticity that muscles do. Rowers that neglect the bench press run into this problem when the connective tissues in their shoulders get stretched out of shape and then their shoulders randomly get dislocated.
