Just browsing youtube for longsword vids, and found a channel called Nikos3000, where I saw this video. Never seen a match between these weapons before, the closest I've come is choreographed demos. Much coolness ensues [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8RWLxlzTiM&feature=relmfu"]Spear vs Sword and Buckler Nick vs Mike Sparring - YouTube[/ame]
That as cool. I have no weapon training what so ever and from the small stuff I've seen I gather historical arts like this to have a very patient sparring style, but wouldn't the guy with the sword have had more success bullrushing a bit more rather than waiting at a distance to parry? Kind of same principle as moving within a baseball bats arc rather than staying on the outside where there's power in a swing?
reminds me of the stuff from the zukuru channel: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHFnjRmJy1o"]Targe'n Broadsword vs Double Saber Sparring - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueQWAxbumFQ"]Machete'n Axe vs Katana Sparring - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi1YUFrQUJk"]Double Saber vs Nito - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Msilwychit4"]Sickle vs Short Sword Sparring - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8QfcQS1ugE"]3 Section Staff vs Spear - YouTube[/ame] also: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jc_zg7cFjc0"]war charriot epic battle - YouTube[/ame]
To be fair he didn't use any of the three section staff close quarter techniques, preferring to keep distance and swing it. Wish I'd had someone to spar against with mine in the 80s

actually, john, that might be a western spear (and spear use methods) there, hence why you don't see spear rotation methods. seems way too short, thick and inflexible to be a qiang to me.
Looks like a fun day out. Would liked to see a Bo vs Nunchuku vs Sai vs Katana match though (hee hee)

Indeed. Could it be that he really did not know how to use it to the fullest? That he lack skill? The main problem I see with a sectional cudgel, be it the nunchakus, the chang xiao ban, or the san ji gun, is that many people are drawn to its action, but far few actually practice all of the applicable methods.
I'd imagine that's because they're using a HEMA military spear method. European military spears, certainly in the post medieval period were too long to flower with, like the Da Qiang [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FGOCg-VMIg&feature=related"]Baji Quan 6 harmony big spear old video - YouTube[/ame]
Its always the obvious answer But I would think it goes both ways: Its a thrusting weapon so running at its point is a bad idea. At the same time its a thrusting weapon so standing at a distance is a bad idea. Like I said I don't know anything about EMA style stuff, wasn't that long ago I learnt there were actually fighting systems, so I'm just spit balling. Ah. Thanks for the quote man.
That first video demonstrates that you should not stay at the opponents-killing-distance, especially if you cannot do any harm at that distance. Whenever we're facing spear in sparring, we do what we call a spear-hunt (basically trapping the spear, and closing past the tip), but even that is not easy.
Indeed - assuming the spearman is as skilled as the swordsman all the odds are in their favour if out in the open - reach matters and the answers for the swordsman seem fairly universal (leastwise longsword or katana vs pole arm - not sure what a rapier weilder would do since beating down the spear tip and closing is possibly not as viable an option). While its not spear but glaive vs sword, look at youtube for isshu jiai matches, or for katori shinto ryu naginata kata.
