i got my grading results tonight i passed my red 2nd bar :D, this was my first grading just curious what does it mean 2nd bar and what are the belt rankings in the u.k.?

the only thing they said was keep my guard higher while doing roundhouse kicks, ive been working on this for the last two weeks anyway and im slowly getting better! also i kinda did maself over at training tonight, pushed maself and by the time i got to the 3rd round of sparring at the end of the session i went light headed and almost passed out so i had to sit that round out, dont know what the hell happened their haha!

cheres for reading this and any comments will be appreciated ta.

Grading systems vary from club to club so cant help on that one sorry.

Is it your front hand or back hand that is dropping? Or both? If your going flat out as well as water take some lucozade or something in between rounds and before you start so you get a little bit of extra sugar pumping through you, it should help a little.

    Congratulations on passing! :)

    first off - cheers,
now then, ive tried those lucozade drinks but they give me cramps so ive been sticking to water i might add some cordial to it to get some sugar, basically when i kick with my left leg i drop my right guard and when i kick with my right i drop my left, im improving but its 1 of my problems, a few knocks in sparring should sort that out haha!

Even if you just take squash or something to drink as well will help just a bit of sugar is all you need.

Do you practice at home? If so try kicking with your hands up around your head palms flat on the ear. Do plenty of them and it will soon become second nature. Of course you can always tape your hands up which is something I've had to resort to with one of my students ;)

2nd bar means you skipped a couple. Well done.

For your guard, see our Kerry, she'll be happy to put you right as a training partner and punch you in the face.

(She's not there tomorrow so see Kirsty about the DVD)

I have never understood why there are gradings in kickboxing. There aren't grades in boxing! In say, karate, judo, etc, there are so many elements to gradings, where kickboxing everything is geared for the ring. Therefore, shouldn't anything you acheive be as a result of what you have done in that ring? I mean, how could you be a 5th, 6th, 7th, whatever dan in kickboxing? There are lots about though!

Because it partly comes from karate. It's entirely voluntary here but people love to grade.

Not everything is. Attitude, enthusiasm & dedication are all part of our gradings. These can't be measured by fighting ability alone. Title are more important than gradings though.

It stops at black with us. Only takes about 7 or 8 years.

    As Moi said :

Also many of todays kickboxing associations have strong ties with karate either its something they teach or like me come from a karate background so the ranking system has often carried through.

With me grading is only offered if you want it other than that you do the same as everyone in the class anyway, people just like to get something after at the end of it all , just the same as you would in karate, tkd, judo etc etc

Ring sports are one aspect of it, fitness, technique & ability etc all come into play.

So, what would a typical black belt grading in kickboxing consist of?

    Mines :

    • Cover all techniques and combinations from previous grading
    • Competed in at least 5 light contact fights
    • First Aid trained
    • Assessment of coaching skills to a group of novice Kickboxers.
    • 10 x 2 minute rounds of pad work (combinations provided on the day)
    • 5 x 2 minute rounds of sparring (light contact)
    • 5 rounds of drills assigned by the instructor on the day.

    Fitness test

    Xmin skipping
    150 push-ups in x minutes

    600 crunches in x minutes

200 squat kicks in x minutes
    Bleep Test

So what style do you do Puma?

The grading are a typical lesson format with sparring at the end for the advanced people.
Most people never get asked to grade to black. For those that do they have earned it before they ever enter the grading. That's the benefit of training with the head of the org for the country.

Karate. Done some boxing too. I know some kickboxers from various places. Some grade, some don't. So you don't necessarily have to get in the ring for the higher grades?

Fighting is the usual route here. I can't think of a B/B that hasn't fought but then again there are so few. People have been known to sit at brown for years. Black is kept for those that can do as well as pass the other criteria. It's not awarded often.
