There's a video game one, so I thought, why not start book one?

I can't pick one, but two of my favourites are the man, Roland, the fastest gun in the universe from The Dark Tower by Stephen King, and Sam Vimes, the most streetwise man ever, from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series.

A close runner up is Carrot, also from the Discworld books. He's a giant of a man who was raised by dwarves, and has a heart of gold, yet can beat the living daylights out of anyone in his way.

    Nice thread idea...

I'd have to submit the following two:

Benjamin J. Grimm - The Ever Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing
    (Fantastic 4)

    and...

Hell Boy (from the comics and fiction by Mike Mignola)

two characters in somewhat the same vein.

It has got to be Aaragon from LOTR series, he's the man.

    Jim Butcher's "Harry Dresden"

I used to like "Anita Blake" as written by Laurell K Hamilton, but now the series has become badly-written soft core porn...

The "Vampire: Dark Ages" chronicles and the "Vampire: Clan Novels" have some great characters.

I have also got to mention Lestat from the Vampire Chronichles by Anne Rice, in fact the whole series is awash with vibrant characters

  10. Falcore

    Falcore almost acceptable

Gojukjoe, I'm a Vimes fan too! I like Coen the Barbarian and Death a lot too.
Also liked the guy from the Navarone books, by Alistaire McLean - Mallory?
Old school John Clark from the Jack Ryan novels was killer. Back in the "without Remorse" days.
Gurney Halleck from Dune, can beat most men, shields or not, and then play a jolly tune on his balliset. (not sure what a balliset is, but I bet it totally kicks ass)

    Ditto to lots...

Wow I had a hard time thinking of one until I started reading the replies and I agree with so many of them.
I truly enjoyed Roland (aka Gunslinger)
Lestat is a wonderful character too

Of all the characters though I would have to choose SeƱor Quijada (Quesada) otherwise known as Don Quijote de la Mancha.

  18. Kwajman

    Kwajman Penguin in paradise....

    Captain Nemo

The whole Ka-tet was awesome, but I'm going to have to rank them in this order: Roland, Jake, Oy, Susannah, then Eddie.

Colbey from the Renshai Trilogy by Mickey Zucker Reichart... the ultimate swordmaster

From LOTR, have to go with Treebeard. But let's not be hasty.

Druss the Legend from Gemmel's books.

    And the list goes on...
