FrankSV you and I are the same size. I put us in the Big grouping because we're bigger than the little wippets that fly so effortlessly.
Being able to'fly" is all about ccordination and body dynamics. It doesn't hurt to have a good strength/bodyweight ratio, though. I weigh between 245-255 lbs and get some great air(see pictures of me in photo gallery under "Uke's Mom"), so I really don't see weight (as long as it is lean mass) as a detriment. However, I will say that, since I have relatively small joints, the landings can be hard (though knee injuries and being over 40 can add to the effect).
Yeah baby, you certainly can fly and the fact that you are six feet tall make it even better. I for myself, i love to do the flying side kick, it's my favourite kick. I'm only like 5'4 and at 57 kg, sure no problem for me. When we have a demo, i usually volunteer myself to do flying side kick or flying front kick. Right now i'm practicing my flying back kick, i have problems in my landing, shoots!
Double flying reverse hooking kick! [Me on right. ] And my favourite picture of a flying side kick..... And Mitch. I'm aware I still haven't got my arms in a guard.
You all can be jealous of me!!!! Last night I was demonstrating a slide in, jump roundhouse kick and I asked a young student (about 7 years old) to count how many seconds I could "float". I did the kick, asked the young fellow, and he very seriously said "3 seconds!"... the new time to beat at our school. Read 'em and weep!
Ive never really tried to fly as yet, being a white belt that is. When will i get a go lol. Or does it depend entirely on each club?
I'm 5' 9 ish and about 66kg. i can fly best doing jumping side kick. Key is to tuck the back leg as much as you can so you can get air for longer. Plyometric training can improve explosive strength, whxi his much needed as mentioned by ksn matt. Plyometric involves leaps, bounds, hops etc. Jumping hurdles of varying heights with both feet together, an no pauses in between each hurdle is considered good plyometric training, and strangely enough is practiced by hurdlers frequently.
I am female. I always think i am quite heavy myself. I'm always in the heavyweights in the ladies sparring. I'm quite flattered too now!
