I haven't posted here in a while, been kind of bumbed out. Had a really rough flu season this year which resulted in missing a month of aikido. After finally recovering i was carrying some heavy meterial off a very icy roof when i took a spill and twisted funny. Went to the Doctors and he is fairly certain i have a minor spinal injury, i am currently waiting for a CT scan. So no aikido until i know what's going on. I'm kind of nervous, according to the Doc, their is not a whole lot they can do. Try not to aggravate it. So my question to you folks, how many of you have had such an injury and later continued with a throwing or grappling art? Right now, the steps I'm thinking of taking once i get the all clear from the doc is to take yoga to try to strengthen the core and lower back muscles and boxing if i feel that aikido or judo will risk aggravating or worsening this injury. Kinda really bumbed about this.
In my experience a doctor and a back injury don't go together. I was told by my doctor that I had scoliosis. The Chek practitioner I went to said that was a load of rubbish and something often said by doctors. My suggestion, based on experience only, is to see a specialist if you're not happy with your doctor. That said get the diagnosis first. There is a difference between muscular problems (which is what I had) and an injury.
Theres a lot of misinformation out there about ignoring drs advice. if you uk based and getting treatment via the NHS, your CT scan will be read by a Radioologist and if theres anything there (which the radiologist will see) your gp will refer you to a specialist. In the meantime its not a good idea to continue training in any throwing arts. a close friend of mine prolapsed a few discs wrestling and had to have a year off training, clever rehab and a lot of light training meant he could get back to it eventually.

Yes. Paul Chek seems to have gone barking mad, but the practitioner I saw is extremely good. In fact he now works with some of the worlds best golfers. When my back went I couldn't even walk. When I got in my car I had to grab my trousers to get my leg inside. I didn't have the strength to lift them using muscles alone. It took a while, but the Chek practitioner got me working again. Like I said the doctor's advice came first. But I would also be consulting someone like Late for dinner. http://www.martialartsplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109009 Edit. This is where I went. http://www.southcote.com/team/team_rob_goldup.html
