    Hi,

I'm looking for a good ****o-ryu club / organisation in the southwest UK - has anyone got any recommendations please ?

I would consider anything west of Swindon and south of Gloucester.

    Many thanks.

Only know of Shotokan and Wado (and derivatives) round here I'm afraid. Have studied ****o Ryu previously?

I trained in a bit in ****o-ryu when I was away at college and I'd like to carry on with it. I can't believe that there aren't any around sw uk. Why would that be?

It's not that common a style here. To me it doesn't look much different to Shotokan tbh.

it is VERY different to shotokan :p

dunno about ****o in the UK though, definitely seems to be uncommon around those parts. these are the peeps from the branch i train in: http://www.hayashiha.co.uk
but until i searched right now i didn't even know they had UK people, so dunno where they are or what they're like (it's hayashi-ha so it's likely good, though :p. not biased at all, no sir :p)

In all seriousness, the differences between the Naha-Te systems are so small that in Chinese martial arts they'd barely be considered distinct lineages, never mind different styles.

agreed (for most of karate, actually), but the same could be said for a lot of southern chinese styles :p

also shotokan isn't a naha style, it's mixed shuri and some measure of tomari (you'd have to ask jwt about the tomari part). it shares the shuri and some tomari with ****o because the founders both trained with itosu and shared a lot of material between themselves and with others in okinawa (they were apparently friends, and both participated in the ryukyu kenkyukai where chummy sensei in okinawa would train and brainstorm together while sharing their stuff).

but barring shotokan lineages that have added stuff relatively recently (like asai's branches which have variable CMA influence, or kanazawa's borrowing of two naha kata for SKIF), you won't find things like nipaipo, anan or tomari passai whithin shoto, and all three are flagship ****o-ryu high level forms (although being a CMA guy you'll probably laugh at that turn of phrase :p). also the part where shotokan is all long and wide while ****o is supposed to be compact (aesthetically you could say overall it's analogous to comparing hung ga to five ancestors, say)

I meant to say Shuri, it was early :(

Just looks like the same style taught by different people.

because we're looking at the shared stuff (mind you, 90% of shotokan is in ****o-ryu already :p), which basically is the same stuff taught to different people who then taught it differently. compare this though:

this reminds me of the time a shotokan black belt from the shoto group i was training with at the time tried to argue with me that ****o-ryu and shotokan were incompatible :p

Seriously, that last one if it wasn't labelled I wouldn't have known it wasn't Shotokan. Also the stances in both aren't especially high or short

In contrast this is Choy Li Fut from the same branch

There's more variation between my students than there is between ****o and Shoto.

lol. shotokan people tend to get aneurysms if people in their classes start doing ****o-ryu like movements. trust me, i've done both, and they're different :p

we can have a proper laugh about it next time i skip across the pond :D

(also krotty people tend to be very anal about uniformity in movement; prioritizing form over function and all that, and probably holdovers from when it was taught in schools and bootcamp)

So, back to the original question.....

Are there really no ****oryu clubs west of Swindon and south of Gloucester? (Note I dropped the use of the word 'good').

What would be the nearest one?

i have no idea because i don't live in england, but i did link you to the uk branch of a ****o-ryu lineage, whom you could ask as they might know of other ****o people from other lineages too, if they turn out to not have any schools that fit the bill.

Why are you surprised? It's a less common style and the area you describe is sparsely populated.
