would martial arts help you in prison?

I know a few Prison guards, none of them actually train in a martial art. Although some of their colleagues are boxers/brawlers.

However what got them through is a lot of life experience, environmental/self awareness and a small dose of paranoia.

On a personal note, never been in prison. So can't really say what could help you. There's only so much outside, looking in kind of observations you can give.

Same here -- in my job I meet prison guards, and occasionally visit prisons. So far I haven't met any who train in a martial art. They get a tiny bit of training with the job, but it's mostly exactly what you said, plus constant team work (because they're ridiculously outnumbered by the inmates).

A mate of mine is a prison guard, he trains BJJ, he's not going to be pulling guard in a riot.

Yup. Been to Pentonville a few times for work. Freaks me out a little. I love hearing stories from them though. :)

When I was training JJJ there was a prison guard in the class. He had stories of using some of the throws on inmates who attacked him... not sure how accurate those stories were (we never did any pressure testing in that class).

I have done time in jail. I had one altercation. My tang soo do helped me. Noone messed with me afterwards. That was jail not prison. Prison is worse.

This may be a politically incorrect thing to say but while I never had anything against lesbians before, after being locked up with them I don't like them at all. An 18 year old girl in there, the lesbians harassed her to the point she was afraid to leave her cell. She would sit there crying. The 3 girls who attacked me they wanted to show me some love if you know what I mean. You can ask them if im a good fighter.

You do realise the people you have a problem with are rapists, they were only lesbians because you were in a single sex jail.

Jail and prison are both used interchangeably to mean the same thing in most English speaking countries, I imagine it's the state or county bit that's important.

Edit this is a good read

Prison culture is hardly a thing to fairly judge the general GLBT community for. People turn to whomever they can for their relationship needs in prison. And people engage in same sex relationships that are not normally inclined to do so.

Furthermore, there are abusers of all types. Your prison friends experience happened to be from lesbians, but there are plenty of straight abusers. You just won't run into them in that setting.

To judge the whole GLBT community based on a community of people paying the price for already breaking a law of society hardly seems like a fair sample of my community.

To have a bad experience with a group, then slam/ judge the entire group because of the actions of a few is a type of bigotry IMO. For example: I am not going to judge all people who have been in jail as homophobic because you express an anti-GLBT sentiment.

I was in jail because I made stupid mistakes. Im far from being perfect. Maybe I shouldn't have posted what I did, I was just answering whether martial arts can help you behind bars. It can and tang soo do is effective against multiple attackers. Take it from me.

You could have posted the above sentiment without slamming lesbians as a group. You went beyond answering whether MA's can help behind bars. You could have even referred to the situation. It was the judgement of the entire lesbian community based on your experience that IMO was out of line.

Yep... in the US Federal system, they generally have a different meaning. In New York State, for example, when you are arrested you are detained in a jail (short term). If you are convicted of a crime where the punishment is less than one year, it is normally in a local or county jail. For a longer term, it can be in a state prison (or federal prison). So generally, a 'jail' has shorter term offenders who have been convicted of lesser crimes whereas a 'prison' is generally full of people convicted of more serious crimes.

But yes... in the US, people often use the terms interchangeably even though there are nuanced differences.

If you want me to give a blow by blow account of the fight I will do my best but it happen so fast it was kind of a blur. If you have been in a fight you know what I mean. I got hit more than once and didn't realize it until afterward. Adrenelin takes over if you know what I mean. I gave better than I got. Take it from me, in a fight everything happens so fast theres no time to think, you have to be able to respond instinctively. In that moment you are on autopilot. If not for those long hours of training and sparring I would have been fresh meat for them.

No asked for that or even hinted in that direction.

The point made was that it's simply stupid to judge an entire group of people, by the actions of a few; especially if that was an experience like that in a single sex environment.
