Hello, im considering learning Aikido, i like the thought of combining joint locks/throws/holds/pressure point training/weapon defence/multiple attacker defence in one, but the biggest let down is ive heard alot of bad reviews on aikido, saying it works in the dojo but not in real life, there are many different styles of aikido, does anybody know of any Styles of Aikido that still train all these points, but in a realistic way, that could be used effectively in a real life situation, or any other martial art that combines all of this that is realistic...
Whichever style/martial art i choose, it will be combined with boxing.
    Thank You

if you're located in the usa, i'd stick well-established aikido organizations. like usaf or asu. most dojos in my experience are affiliated with either. i personally like usaf schools better, but that's just me. doesn't seem like ki aikido is very well respected in my interactions with mappers. but who knows, you might find someone that likes it.

i think as far as whether it's realistic or not, kind of up to the teacher. look, it's a stylized martial art. it can be a very rewarding experience and can also be incredibly fun to practice and there's definitely a lot to learn. the principles are very important, but teaching of those principles happen in a stylized way. sounds like you've got a good idea to do boxing and aikido.

It's not the style that is important its the teacher that decides the standard of what he/she teaches. you have to remember that Aikido is a Traditional MA not a modern fighting system. Aikido will not teach you how to stand toe to toe with a fighter but it is an amazing form of self defence. If you are looking for styles that are considered more Martial then look for Iwama or Yoshinkan but that does not mean any other teacher from another style does not teach effective Sd either. There is only ONE way to know and that is go around and try ALL the dojos in your area When I first started I sued to travel to all the dojos in my city until I knew what I was after.,

....to add to dento, I would also suggest you give each place you visit a fair chance. School have 'off nights' for a variety of reasons, such as different teachers, slow night, etc. Its good to visit a place more than once..on different days. The people you train with, and the person who teachers you, is more important than the organization you belong to.

    Good luck in your search!

Tomiki Aikido or Shodokan Aikido but still check for paticular teacher and school. Watch out for the wierdo Japanophiles.
