Hi! After almost two years I finally got my chance of going back to Aikido. I was so excited and I've enjoyed it so much. I'm extremely happy of being able to practise once again this martial art I love. I've got to say, I train Karate too and my, it's one hell of a combination. I've never feel so satisfied and complete with my training, both martial arts really give me everything I could ever ask for. So anyway, here I am, so happy to be part of this world of Aikido once again .
Hey everyone. Just thought I'd say hello and introduce myself. I take Nihon Goshin Aikido (ducks flaming debris) and Gracie Jiu-jitsu. I've been training for 4 months and just attained the rank of Go-Kyu (yellow belt) in NGA. I started the GJJ about 2 months ago (my NGA sensei is a Lvl 1 certified instructor). I always wanted to do martial arts and now that I can pay for it I am and I'm loving it!
Hello Everyone, I am marinevet63031. My primary studies have been Hapkido, Tomiki Aikido, Judo, Kenjutsu and Koryo Gumdo. I love Hapkido, it's great. But I love the history and extra umphf of Aikido.
Hi there, I'm new to the site but not completely new to MA I used to study Iaido and kenjutsu. However ended up having to take a break from it. I'm now actually looking to start training again and was looking at Yoshinkan Aikido.
Let me take a guess. Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu and Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu ? Edit: lol I was right just checked your profile, I'm a bit slow. How long did you study Niten for? Did you attend any Dosokai events?
Yes your right! I enjoyed them both, fancy trying an unarmed MA now and Aikido looks like it has a nice mix of martial and cultural qualities.
Hi there, yes I did attend a few Dosokai events, the day training sessions and a weekend seminar once. I can't remember exactly how long I trained for as I have been out of MA for so long now but I think I did it for about a year. I don't drive so wasn't able to continue making the sessions hence my main reason for having to stop. Oh and thank you for the welcome to the forum!
Yoshinkan aikido is very much derived from sword movements. Our lineage added many weapons techniques to add to our hand techniques. We have over 298 weapons movements right now, derived mostly from Muso Ryu Jodo and Yagyu Shinkage Ryu. They compliment each other nicely, particularly tanren.
Really? I was aware that some movements in Aikido stemmed from weapons schools but I didn't know Muso Ryu Jodo was one of them I've known a a few people who have studied that style. I have tried it a couple of time but due to time and not being able to drive I wasn't able to try it more. As for aikido there are a couple of schools near me one is Aikikai the Yoshinkan one is part of the Shudokan set up.
Oh sorry, bad grammar. Aikido/DRAJJ movements are based on sword movements. AND we train in those weapons styles, slightly modified for aikido, to add to our training. I actually do not know if Yagyu Shinkage Ryu directly influenced aikido, I just know it directly influences our bukiwaza. We have no direct affiliation with either weapons kai, nor claim one, but we identify it as the source from which these techniques derived.
