Yes well in many Aikido organisations the technical grading syllabus stops at 3rd dan or there abouts. So what are the ever increasing numbers of high dan grade Aikidoka doing to "earn" 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th dan grade rankings? And remember, currently the highest grade is 10th dan. It should be very difficult to achieve 4th dan and 5th dan. 6th dan and above should be so hard and take so long to obtain they should be considered life time achievement awards. I trained at the same club as the guy in the video below. His 1st dan was pre-ordained because he was being groomed and pushed out to start a club. The last i heard he had been promoted to 4th dan in 2010. So that's 1st dan to 4th dan in little more than 7 years with a free pass to 1st to get him on his way. Where do I buy your brand of coolaid. It does wonders for your perception of reality cuongnhugirl. http://youtu.be/wVHjar8oF7U
Apparently Aikido has a very different grading standard from Cuong Nhu. There are only a select few masters in my style.
I didn't know that about Aikido, but I suppose it's the same in all arts really 1st to 4th in my brand of TKD is a minimum of 9 years for example, assuming you take every grading ASAP and assuming you pass every time, neither of which are in any way a certainty. I always thought Aikido took its time and suffered less from this kind of thing than other arts. Edit to add: could you stick up or point me to a good Aikido vid please Wolfie? I've always had a soft spot or the art but most YouTube stuff looks terrible. Mitch
I think you'll find that opinions as to what is good Aikido will vary just as much as opinions as to what is good karate! From my perspective, this is good Aikido (which is not to say that all of it is practical in the form it is shown here). I've been Uke for some of his students and you don't hit the deck because you want to. What is good karate! Tae... Too easy Just the first few seconds of the first vid look more convincing. Strikes are incorporated, movement is circular, arms are bent, movement pulls in to centre, etc etc. What I watched of Aiki's vid showed a guy with straight arms and no strikes pushing limbs down then walking around. If my TKD students did that in the VERY limited vertical grappling we do I would think it mechanically poor, though it's hardly our forte so I hesitate to offer that as meaningful comment. Mitch
Actually Aikido is more susceptible. Especially the ki orientated variants. My own videos are pretty terrible. Look up some of Koyo's stuff.
Thought I'd post a couple of my favourite Aiki videos : [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MIVo68o6Sg"]Tissier Bercy 2005 HD - YouTube[/ame] (Shihan Tissier, I'm very fond of). I am sure...isn't it just unfortunate that a "Master" and a "Grandmaster" had an off day at exactly the same time Is it akin to women menstrual cycles coinciding if they live together...?
That was the most bastardized adaptation of the Philly Shell I have ever seen. At least they are moving about and getting exercise . . . . I guess . . . . :star:
True in general, though Steven Seagal earned his in Japan, the hard way. When it comes to aikido, he really has the skills.
