I can't imagine any healthy person could break their shin like that whilst wearing a set of shin pads. Honestly, most people are incapable of kicking hard enough to do that without pads - this was Anderson freaking Silva we're talking about now.

Didn't Caraway get involved first? Elbowing Rousey at a rules meeting was the first time I heard anyone be involved that wasn't Miesha or Ronda.

Speaking of Caraway, how much would Tate benefit from a new camp? I'm very dubious about couples being training partners/coaches and he didn't offer any decent advice in the corner from what I remember.

I thought the elbowing incident was against Cat Zingano?

Edit: Yes, it was against Cat, not Rousey.

They have given each other HORRIBLE corner advice in the past. Tate once told Carraway to coast, because she was sure he had won both rounds up to then. He lost the fight in a decision.

Ronda always brings up the dumbass tweet Caraway sent out before their Strikforce fight, but he's apologised for that over and over again - he's a hothead and does dumbass things, but then, so it Edmond.

I think it was Zingano who accused Caraway of elbowing her at the weigh in before their fight. He denied it and it's entirely possible that it was an accident. Would be a bizarre thing to do, right? I mean - he couldn't be that much of an idiot could he?
The best coach is the one you're comfortable taking advice from. Plus, he's not the entirety of her set up - Ricky Lundell is a bona fide badass.

its also in thai isnt it? my coaches at leicester shootfighters taught the same block, lead with the knee to destroy the leg, or at least make them think twice about throwing the leg kick , one of those things you just suck up and realise its going to hurt but hurt him more than you lol

My Thai coaches are quite explicit that you never check with the knee unless you want a mangled patella.

I get that you could probably align the knee in such a way where it remains structurally sound, but it just seems like an incredibly risky thing to do. If you don't get it exactly right you run the risk of destroying your knee and for what? The potential to cause your opponent a marginal amount more discomfort than a much safer technique? That just doesn't sound like a good trade-off to me.

I find this kind of injury is more of a million to one chance of occuring.

To me its a standard leg check, raise knee high and point shin outwards.

How different is "the destruction" supposed to be?

About shin guards, any normal ones gives you enough padding. Though I like to spend money on stuff like that. Theres a shinpad available on the super cheap, pretty much made of thin foam. Might as well just be a pair of thick long socks.

To be fair I've also seen plenty of thai fighters come to the gym that have been taught to counter swing on low kicks soooo :p

Blocking with the knee does sound a bit dangerous. I do it now and again but that's because I'm either being lazy, or I haven't got time to cross check properly. Like you've said Holy I have caught kicks on my knee badly before and been in a lot more pain doing that then I would if I'd gone shin to shin. On the flip side I've kicked enough people in the knee to know I'd much rather someone shin checked so I guess both sides have good points.

Are those the white elasticy blitz ones? If so, I hate anyone who uses them. This is a really freak injury though I agree. Doesn't feel much different than the guy who got his arm dislocated from a blocked punch.

Yes! Here I am wearing thick Twins pads and weigh loads, but if I kick your face, theres minimal damage...those thin ones, I can still feel your shins!

True - would also probably do for her fighting career what "The Happy Warrior" did for Roxanne Modaferri's.

Chan Sung Jung against Jose Aldo. It got some flak for a couple days because Aldo kicked him in the shoulder after he dislocated it

I'm amazed with those sticks that he calls legs would have lasted this long. Of course the shin is in front and not much muscle there as far as protection, so it likely has nothing to do with it... but the different ways all of these guys are built is pretty interesting. I know a guy who did Muay Thai for I think 2-3 years and while it's been a while since he got out of it, he's got cows... not calves. The kickboxing instructor I went to before also has the same thing. I wonder if it's simply from kicking so much, or if they are actually working with weights?

Such a shame that he had to go out like that instead of some epic fight that everyone would remember. I think the first win was a fluke with Silva clowning around to much... I would imagine if the fight were to have kept going that Anderson would have won it.

The good news is that Dana White has now lost his top 2 guys... the dude is a real jerk and doesn't care about his fighters at all. Did anyone see his reaction after St. Pierre said he was going to take some time off after his fight with Hendricks? Pathetic.

I don't watch MMA, but an internet link piqued my interest on this one.

He didn't contact with the patella, it was just underneath (ligamentum patellae?)

    I'd say weights and/or cycling.

Bit of mix of both, I've got big calves and quads from years horse stance and general other training, weights wise I'm actually not that strong in comparison.

My MT coach however is like 66kg and squats 100kg like its a warmup but has skinnyish legs.
Another guy on my team tho, hes my height, about 96kg and his legs look like the figure "8" with a shoe underneath. And we've had shin clashes with made us both go ouchie.

Silva is also a tall and lean dude so naturally for him he may just have thin legs.

Regardless I go by the old gym meme.

"Bros don't let other Bros skip leg day"
