So this year I've started open university and I'm studying business & management in sports (primarily football). I was thinking in second year about doing running a competition or interclub for charity. Everyone wins. Nowe, logistics aside (that will be the event management stuff) I want a completely different set of BJJ rules. Something way more exciting than any rule set available. Again, this would mainly be for experience of repackaging something and selling it to someone, but along the lines of catch wrestling with points. So here me out. The idea is that submis sion is he over-all goal. For instance, and attempted arm bar from guard would be three points, whilst an attempted arm bar from mount would be 5. The idea is to award points for the position and the submission, rather than the position alone. So a top position submission attempt would gain more points than the same submission from the bottom. Points are awarded at referees discretion, although I would have to release a full rule book of what qualifies as "attempted". Along he lines of spider-web position for an arm bar. For arm kimura it would be the hand position plus the opponents wrist past his waist line. So if you applied it from top side control the opponents hand would have to armpploed least touch the mat or be behind his back before pointshe were scored. The goal is of course that at the end of the day, there are no points because everyone wins via submission. This would probably all be in a given for grading simplicity. Too many no-gi guys with shady records. Any thoughts?
What football actual football or yank wannabe football? I cant really comment on the actual rulesets, but providing its sufficiently different you could start off a new trend. I would personally be interested to see another countering ruleset. (i can comment on the buisness side of it, not the making of it at least)
Just a suggestion, that seems like a pain to keep track of the rules, keep it simple, go to sub, but the sub gives you a point, and then you reset either standing, or a neutralish position of your choice. Most points wins, most points on the day wins a massive chocolate bar.
I see where you're going, and I like the concept. I haven't done scoring in BJJ, only in Judo, and I thought there was a lot more complexity to the scoring system. It sounds like a mix between the to rulesets. So you can only score by applying a submission? Are the points only score if the opponent taps? Based on what you're laying out, would a flying armbars from standing get more points than any sub from a ground grappling position?
Actually I was thinking it would be whoever catches the submission wins. @DP It should be fairly simple. Kimura would be like 3 points. Applying it from your back would be three points. Applying it from top positions would be three points + points for the dominant position. Like side control. 3 points for a kimura and +2 because it was from side control. The kimura is always three points, just the position determines it's final value.
Remove all the boredom and just make it striking? Seriously though, minor changes in rulesets can have a huge impact on how a competition works, and sometimes in an unforeseen manner. Take some time to think through the consequences. I know you don't need telling, but do your research on the legal requirements for insurance, medical cover, ambulances in attendance, etc etc. Don't take anyone's word for it on these things, the consequences are too far reaching, get proper legal advice and pay up accordingly. Well I think the plan will be to trial it with some referees that I train with and get some simulation matches on he go to try and replicate an actual competition. They can score it accordingly. Of course in regards to health and safety, insurance etc, I will be taking the utmost precautions and make sure I have insurance, a medical staff on site, and anything else I might need.
