Just found some boxes in the attic, I think from when we moved in eight years ago lol. Just opened up one of them to find two fencing masks. They're a bit small for my head so I'm guessing they're medium size.

Thing is, as might be expected after being left in an attic for a decade, they both have small patches of rust scattered throughout the mesh. Can this be fixed so I can sell them or whatever, or is there a danger that this will have weakened them enough that it would be dangerous to rely on them?

I bought them yeaaaaaars ago for historical fencing purposes, never did get to even try them, so I dunno anything about their general build quality, etc.

Depends on what the potential buyer trains with. For shinai or plastic sparring they should be fine if you give them a wipe over with an oily cloth to remove active red rust. Steel on the other hand needs top quality protection.

If you're honest about the condition you should be ok to sell them.

Cool, thanks. I know this is awkward without me posting pictures but what sort of price would be reasonable for them? If you saw a listing for a medium mask with a few rusty spots what price would you think "hm, that's decent for what it is"?

A lot depends on the make and the quality of the lining. For a relatively new Leon Paul with decent padding maybe £30-£40, for an unknown make with no padding you wouldn't waste your money.

Bear in mind you can get a new mask for less than £40.

Couldn't you clean them and then do a Punch Test to verify integrity at the suspect regions?

    Hi Hatamoto
I bought a few rust-spotted fencing masks a few years ago on ebay. They were of various quality but I just wanted them for singlestick, paying £10 -£15each I think. When I started training with metal longswords I bought new, heavy gauge masks.

Check out ebay to get some idea of the latest s/hand prices

I was thinking of lobbing them on ebay for £10 plus whatever postage is expected to be, so that'll be around £15 I expect. Thanks for the suggestions.
