I just thought I'd start this up again, this time in the computer forum. So for your techies (or wanna be techies) what are you working on or hoping to work on? I'm doing my MCP in C#. For some reason having a few years experience isn't enough where I'm at, you need a bit of paper that says it as well! It will be an interesting process. I'm doing a lot with XML at the moment too when I have a minute. It started with working with Schema for site maps, then it moved on to playing about with XQuery. In the New Year I'd like to explore other programming paradigms. It's part of why I'm thinking of a PhD, I love learning and researching and having time to do it would be a plus. https://lnkd.in/eZRFK4b
Im hoping to learn a stats programming language to further my career opportunities and give me some skills for academic interests. It'll probably be SAS or R. I realise stats programming languages are relatively simple so hopefully i'll pick it up quickly
You should be grand! Have you thought about some kind of database query language too like some version of SQL? Very easy to learn and really useful for storing/sorting/mining data.
SAS is the main package used by pharma companies (they mainly look for SAS programmers) R seems to be a big thing for genetics and bioinformatics though!
Although not really programming, I need to get myself trained up on GIS software. It wasn't really a thing when I went through uni, but so many jobs I'm looking at right now want people with experience in it.
My brother got trained up in GIS at uni and he's looking for a job - i keep telling him that theres looooads looking for GIS (especially environemental jobs) but he's not listening.
There are a lot of distance courses for GIS now so you are in luck. It depends on what you want to do with GIS. If you want to display data in a web app, JavaScript/HTML/CSS is always good. For actually tinkering with something like ArcGIS, we had a .Net developer who tweaked ArcGIS using C# That said there are only so many hours in the day and figuring out GIS is probably enough to be going on with
At the moment I just want to become competent at using GIS programmes like ArcGIS, before I even start to think about using more advanced programming skills. I've been looking at some 2-3 day courses as well as a some online stuff.
