I'm treating myself to a new PC for academic work/coding projects. I also want to get back in to my first love: PC gaming! I always had a soft spot for strategy games with a historical setting... stuff like Age of Empires and Civilization.It's been about 10 years since I gamed on a PC and things seemed to have moved on since then. Are there any good strategy games with an historical twist people could recommend?? Thanks!
The Civilization series is great last I played was 5 with all the he DLC so you have religion and politics. The Total War series also depending on which operating system you use I would recommend the original Medieval, Rome and Shogun 2. Rome 2 was a major disappointment. If you're into football I would highly recommend Football Manager. Since you mentioned AOE check out AOE 2 HD which is the original game with HD resolutions for newer systems plus many mods. Also AOE 3 complete. If you enjoy the RTS aspect of AOE you may enjoy Mobas like Dota 2.
Civ and Total War are the obvious ones. I liked Rome 2 personally If you want something very different, try Crusader Kings. More of a politic simulator than a strategy but it's different
What did you like about Rome 2? In your eyes how does it compare to Rome 1 or its predecessor Shogun 2? How did it improve upon them other than the Naval battles and graphics?
I was going to post almost exactly this. ...Great minds think alike? I also like Dawn of War: Dark Crusade for a slight change of pace. And Blood Bowl. Though Nuffle will hate you forever.
I feel like the politics and economic systems work better. I haven't played much of the original Rome though so I don't have the same hang ups and reference point as old school fans. I think 2 has problems, the army limit is infuriating for one, but I think the updated version as it stands now is a perfectly good total war game. Which is all I was after. Being stumped is a bit vague Biggest thing I had to learn though is to get a handle on the economy. I played total war as a straight military game for ages and kept going bankrupt r unable to afford armies. Got to get that infrastructure.
A mix of strategy, live action and 'what the hell is going on' I recommend Mount and Blade: Warband. Highly addictive and surprisingly deep play for a Medieval sandbox.

Also one of the best mod scenes I've seen. If you like the gameplay there's enough out there for a few hundred hours. This is a really left field suggestion but I think you can call it a strategy game: War of Mine is an awesome game. Not historic, but it does require strategy in managing time and resources. Also one of the most engaging and atmospheric games I've played. Europa Universalis is a grand strategy with huge emphasis on "grand." Couldn't get my head rounds it personally but could be worth a look and goes on sale fairly frequently. Dropping military stuff for a moment Guild is also a fun medieval economy strategy
After taking a look at Crusader Kings 2 I ended up buying it yesterday. I have been taking a break from gaming I will try and resist this game until after the summer!
Turn based are a favorite of mine. Try battle isle 2220 from GOG for a good retro one. Stars! was a classic for win98 but haven't found a version that will play on win 7. Seems like turn based startegy and flight sims are both on the down swing in gaming now
I hate whoever recommended Crusader Kings 2. Since buying it and all the DLC. I played the learning scenario with no clue as to what I'm doing. I watched a tutorial series around 22 videos on YouTube over the course of a couple weeks. I read a lot of reddit guides and stuff. So I played as Ireland and on my first play through made a lot of mistakes. Don't just randomly give out Duke status to sons. Don't have a tumble with your sons wife. Now I've finally managed to unite and take over Ireland. Now what? Should I focus on tech and securing my reign on Ireland? There are a couple of vassals who hate me. Or do I need try for Wales and Scotland. Also my wife and kids hate me for legitimising a ******* but I see him as my. Jon snow and he came with the "strong" trait.
i'm just randomly going to namedrop sid meier's alpha centauri and the three original x-com games. it just so happens both franchises have modern spiritual successors developed by firaxis as well
I also have a soft spot for the old Star Wars 'Rebellion' game. Nothing like using your death star to blow up coruscant!
