I cant believe you fell for the clickbait title....................

So anyway I'm about to become a parent, does anyone have any useful advice apart from ''dont do it!'', as its a bit too late now!

hahah, I thought it was a spam post, wasn't going you click until I saw the poster name ;)

congratulations! my advice is enjoy it, they grow up fast and you only get one chance.

On martial arts related note; expect training priorities to change :) I ended up out of class for 7 years, I still trained other ways, it was my choice so I could be there after a long working day.

I'm already planning on dropping training from my current 4/ 5 times a week, to 1 or 2 a week, and I'll be hitting the gym on the way home from 30 minutes instead,

    Firstly, congratulations.

    Time is your friend.

All kids want is your time. You'll never have a problem if you make the time to give your child the attention they crave.

Also take loads of pictures and videos.

Time goes so fast. One minute they are tiny little things that look so vulnerable and the next they are getting ready for school.

One day they don't want to hold your hand in front of their mates because you are an embarrassing parent.

All of it is good, but take pictures and videos so you can recall it all. Keep them on a drive somewhere, as computers crash.

It sounds obvious, but don't forget your partner.

In the early days the house can become like a prison. Dead_pool jnr will need you both 24/7 and it's easy to become house trapped.

Nowadays both partners tend to work, but my wife was a stay at home parent. The guy gets a break by going to work, but the mother gets stuck at home day after day looking after the baby.

Watch out for it and get her outside away from the house.

I posted this memory on FB yesterday.

Picture must be 19 years old.

Stretching started early in my house. :D

If I give up "debating on line" , that's 5 plus hours a week easy!

Very good points Simon, thank you!

Just to ad to simons excellent advise
Stock pile nappies and wipes before hand , you can never have enough
A good colic remedy (like infacol) and liquid paracetamol will save your sanity
Get as much sleep as you can when you can as the first couple of years that's what will get you down
It's all worth it in the end though , trust me

Pretty much like what aardia said: I don't have children.

And just to scare you: I'm glad everytime after training the kids, that I can give them back after an hour ;)

I'm sure it will be different with your own kids though ;)

    But congratulations on Dead_pool II.

Always remember: Raising kids is similar like raising dogs.
Be consequent, love them, give them time, love them, have patience, love them, be there for them...
Did I mention to love them?

@Simon: Does it make me a bad person, that one of the first thoughts after seeing that picture, was: Hey, that looks like a cat toy in the background?
Also: I wish I kept a stretching from early years; it's so ridiculously easy for easy for little kids

    Congratulations DP!

My parental advice, that I wish someone had bestowed upon me with my 1st, is to try not to over think things - Let it come naturally! (Note: Good luck with that though, as it'll be damn near impossible)

As for future training goes, once the little one is big enough (can sit up unaided) start lifting them as part of your work out (Curls, press, twists, weighted sit ups etc...) It'll be excellent time spent with them, they'll absolutely love it (mine did and still do) and once they learn to talk, chants of 'again, again' will have doing so many more reps than you thought possible... :D

    I remembered another gem that worked well both times for us;

Do a load of bulk cooking, and split it up in the freezer so you have easy access meals for 2 weeks. Finding the time for proper cooking, or energy in the first few weeks was hard, and takeaway or ready meals can quickly become costly.

    Oh, you jerk! :mad::mad: :p:p :D:D

Stock up on diapers now. Keep buying them over the next however-many months, because YOU WILL USE THEM. It's ridiculously insanely crazy how many diapers babies go through.

To help save the planet, look into diaper services for cloth diapers. I did it both ways with my children, disposable and cloth, and I tell you, cloth works, and it's probably no more money than disposable. And you'll feel good saving the world! :D

Borrowing from the poem "What are little girls made of?", babies are made of 5 ingredients: poop, slobber, noise, squishiness, and cuteness. Their cuteness makes up for the poop, slobber, and noise. They poop all the time, they slobber all the time, they make noise all night long, but they're soooooo cute!!!!!!

Read up on how to put babies on a feeding schedule. It takes a couple months for the child to learn the rhythm, but if you don't do it -- you'll suffer for the next 10 months because you didn't do it.

And what Simon said is true: "All kids want is your time. You'll never have a problem if you make the time to give your child the attention they crave." Well said.

    Congratulations :)

As everyone has said, having a routine and being prepared makes a huge difference. Being able to walk out of the door and just grab the travel bag you know is already stocked with everything you need makes life a lot easier.

Simon covered all the big points, but keep some time for yourself and junior can fit into your routine. I used to come home from teaching class or training at just the right time to give my son his bottle at one point many years ago for example. That was great :) It's undeniably hard work in the first few years, so cut yourself some slack and look after your partner too.

Time and involvement are the big things though. I painted an old cot and blanket box with characters to match the wallpaper in their nursery for example, something they still remember now. Read bedtime stories, make up stories, give piggy backs, roll around on the floor, and just play :)
