    Hi everyone,

Thought I'd share the Aikido segment from our demo day last year. On show is a bit of randori and some renrakuwaza from shiho nage.

I've titled the thread the way I have to point out that this is the Aikido that Minoru Mochizuki taught (Jan de Jong was an uchideshi to Mochizuki in the late 1960's).

Hiroo Mochizuki's stuff is quite different, and makes up 90% of the Yoseikan vids out there.

    So enjoy!

    Thanks for the comments guys.

Yup, the history is a pretty neat story! The wikipedia article doesn't mention that the sutemiwaza actually comes from an old ju jutsu style, gyukoshin ryu (I think the term gyukoshin is mentioned in there), and not from Judo.

According to Mochizuki he was approached by the headmaster of this school who requested that he learn his ju jutsu system, as he could see it dying out. He actually fed Mochizuki when he went to train with him, as an incentive to learn!

While I haven't graded in this style (I teach ju jutsu at the school), I've seen and experienced my fair share of it - the guy with black hair in the clip - kensei1984 on MAP - is one of my main training parnters.

The fun part is disseminating which waza came from which art that Mochizuki studied. Some is distinctly Shotokan karate, some Judo, some very classic Aikido. Even the sword kumitachi is half Katori Shinto ryu and half Kendo!

I also think Mochizuki showed a pretty progressive attitude in his day, coming back from France - where a lot of people had studied wrestling, Judo or Savate - and more or less saying "Aikido doesn't always work, we need to adapt it". (Those aren't his exact words, before anyone lynches me).

One thing about Aikidoka, they can take some nasty falls.

    Hey kensei,

Yup, I asked the boss for the photo with de Jong sensei and Mochizuki too, so I'm heading there in an ambassadorial capacity - need to start doing some more Aikido classes :p

Thanks for the comments everyone, glad you enjoyed the clips.
