So here I am. Surrounded by testosterone, sweat and the smell of bacon sarnies.

No, I'm not at Mitch's house. Although I cannot confirm nor deny that the smell is related

3 months ago, I was asked if I was willing to help out at a wrestling comp. Although the person asking was my old wrestling coach, the glint in his eye suggested I would also be competing.
Knowing this, I said "maybe". My work is unrelenting in giving me the time off and I been pushing weights more than I have been bodies. My walk around weight is 95kg at this time...last year I weighed 81kg.

Just in case, I half heartedly trained. Not because of disinterest, it's because I really weren't sure of me competing. Every week my Boss said "No, ask next week".

Texts and conversations and discussions about me giving moral support from the far away sidelines, began circulating.
I trained less in the cardio and went back to my weights with the odd MA class. Not dejected but relieved I didn't have to cut weight at a short notice.

So at 1130pm. Another manager cones up to me , over hearing I was asking for leave. I explained the situation and was given the sneaky OK to leave.

6hrs (and a lot of money) later, here I am in Northern England where people sound funny. Men are in are in tight clothing, rolling across the floor with each other, and I'm barely at the sports centre yet.

So. Famous last words. What's the worst that could happen?

PS - I weighed in at 91kg. So I'm (expectedly) one category up.

    Cheers all.

    I'm in Lancaster.

Further twist to the tale. A No Gi comp is happening before the Freestyle, I've been volunteered.

Right. So this event was a No Gi and Freestyle Wrestling event. I usually just go for the FW as you all know, my submission game is terrible.

So there I was, on 2.5hrs sleep (no excuses, all on the Virgin Train), weighing in at a modest 91kg. Placing me in the -96kg category (a full 10kg heavier than last year). I recognised a few familiar faces, some I wrestled before, others I seen and will now wrestle. Even cornered each other if need be.

I realised, my name was on the No Gi list. I tried to explain my position and I was apparently volunteered by a fellow competitor who I've met a few times.
Considering its an "Absolute" comp, I'll be going up against potential brown/purple/white belts. Guess what belt I don't have.

But you know what? Did it anyway.

Rules were something like "white belt IBJJ" rules, no neck cranks, no twisty style subs. No point system. 1st to submit or Judges decision after over time.
    (1x 4min round. 2min overtime)

In my first bout. I remember hip tossing him, he landed and rolled onto his front and I tried to get an anaconda choke, he was a lot bigger than me (big triceps and traps), he fought through and I ended up in a half-guard-arm-in-guillotine. That wasn't fully in, we hand fought for a while. I tried to get full guard but it didn't work, I managed to get half guard-full guillotine, heard him gurgle but he was sweaty at the point and my arms were tired and then the bell rung.
2nd round we fought at a standstill. I remember being sprawled on and side controlled. I got out with a shoulder throw from the ground and also hooked a leg (so it was more of a Samoan roll). :p

I lost on Judges Decision based on being on the bottom.

Next bout, lost by some neck crank in the overtime. 3rd bout, I lost by RNC. I fought off 3 attempts previously and he thought to basically reap the 4th. He also thought I had a belt rank, hence he went for it.
My throat still hurts and I still can't talk clearly.

Freestyle. (straight after the No Gi comp)

I had a big bracket. I needed 5 wins to get gold. I didn't place but I had fight of the night.
Guy I was up against, looked a bit like Ryback, bodybuilder look and stocky...closer to 96kg in size. I don't remember much of what happened, main things I do know is that at some point in 1st round, I arm drag/seo nage threw him. He fought out from under and we had to stand up.
I remember him taking me down a few times from there and me getting up. A lot of countering.
    (Hannibal would like this)
I thought I won, when he tried to do an Gator Roll on me (something I taught at the MAP meet). I reversed it and ended up in a Shawn Michaels-esque pin.
Imagine North South position. His back on the ground, my back on his chest, I quickly grasped both his arms and held onto them. All I heard was shouting from all corners, not realising he had one shoulder still up.
I quickly span to my front, he span to his. I then Quarter Nelson'ed him over and the whistle blew.
Thinking I won...the Ref then said "Back to centre"
Turns out, just before I 1/4 rolled him, we wriggled out of the ring and the time ran out.

We both barely stood up and we were exhausted. 2nd round. More of the same, I hip tossed him and at one point, even (nastily) bullied him out of the ring during the Collar-Elbow Tie.
Biggest move I did, he powered me backwards in the Collar-Elbow. Using his momentum, I Shoulder Threw him again, this time we both went flying, my feet left the floor and I landed right on top of him.
I knew it was good because I heard a collective "Oooh", once again we landed out the ring but I got the points and needed to go back to centre.
We were both tired at this point, I had a little energy left and there was a minute left. I did a Fireman Carry on him before, and he was open, so I did it again. But this time I landed badly ( i think ), We were both exhausted and he ended up pinning me.

It took us a bit of time as we were both exhausted, we both gave it our all. I looked up on the scoreboard and I was 13-10 up. I basically had to dance around and kept stalemate to win, possibly qualify for bronze.

I was later told, that all competitors in the room were shouting, spectators from other classes came and looked and even some Powerlifters in another room came and watched.
I was happy with the match. It was great and I made my people proud.

During the Trophy Ceremony, sitting next to the Gold and being all envious etc. One person stood up and gave a speech about heart and determination. A special mention to the best or most improved, despite winning or losing. I took me a while to realised they said my name.

    Happiest day ever.
