Quick question, Jindotgae... Why did you choose to pattern your screen name after a Korean hunting dog? I'm just curious, do you perhaps own such a dog? Jindo Gae (Hangeul: 진돗개; Hanja: 珍島狗)
im in the process of aquiring such a dog actually, which is a lengthy process as there is only one accredited breeder here in the UK. so il soon be one of few lucky people in the uk to get my paws on one. love everything about these dogs and they seem to hold a good standing in korean culture if im not mistaken? plus sounded like a cool username! (as one would prefair not to reveal his true identity) -J
They're an AWESOME breed, so look forward to years of enjoying your new companion (BTW, GM IHS owns a pair, male & female, and so I have firsthand knowledge of how this breed interacts). If you're familiar with the attachment that rottwielers develop for their owners (a very aggressive protectiveness around strangers) then you can expect similar traits from your jindo dog. For sure! I understand only too well how this aspect comes into play. TBH, it was the 't' that initially threw me off, as Jindo Island doesn't append the sieot [ㅅ] when written in Korean (진도[군] - 珍島[郡] vs 진돗개 - 珍島狗). Having only HEARD the name of the dog (i.e. "jindo-gae"), it wasn't until looking it up on the dreaded wicked pædia that I understood your particular romanization (which would require a French reading of "jindot" - ROFL). Understand that Korean has a few idiosyncratic rules thrust into what is normally a fairly basic & easy phonetic writing system. The reason the sieot [ㅅ] is added, is to ensure that the gieok [ㄱ] recieves proper stress, as otherwise it might tend to be softened too much in a straight reading of "진도개" and this is why "진돗개" is used instead. Still, while the McCune–Reischauer rendition seen on Wicked Pædia looks correct (i.e. Chindotgae), I'm fairly certain that one of the things which make the MCT2000 Revised Romanization so much better, is that it supposedly adapts to actual pronunciation when being rendered, which means that the example listed for 진돗개 is wrong, and should be "Jindogae" instead.
